  Varicam HD-SDI out – to direct disk capture for uncompressed greenscreen

  Another part of the script calls for a greenscreen composite shot.
  It’s fairly simple. A boy is floating in outer space… the stars and sun are behind him.
  Wide shot, Medium and Close.

  I would like to give the compositers the highest quality footage.
  I know it’s possible to come out of the HD-SDI on the Varicam into an AJA Kona 3 and “capture now” within Final Cut to whatever codec you choose.

  Does anybody have experience in doing this?
  How fast does a harddrive have to be to capture ‘uncompressed’.
  Which codec, data rate, compression ratio would you choose?

  Please keep in mind that if you record onto tape in the Varicam and then use the HDSDI out of the camera, you will be compressed. It is only non-compressed during E to E. Off of tape, the signal is compressed.

  yes. so ONLY capturing from HD-SDI… no tape at all.

  I do this regularly the
  HDSDI will give you a clean 10bit NON Compressed Capture direct from the camera on set. This does not change if the camera is recording on tape at the same time.

  For Drive speed.- for live capture I recommend nothing less than a Hardware Raid with redundancy- this is a live capture and failure of a drive in a cheap unit will destroy all of your data.

  1280x 720 60fps @ 10bit need runs about 150MBps

  Thanks Gary, I did not know this.
  I was always told “only on E to E”.
