Are you considering using the camcorder to “digitize” from.

If so this is a bad idea long term. The camcorder transport was not designed to be used for constant searching and shuttling.

In general putting additional wear and tear on the camcorder heads and transport is highly discouraged.

Rent or buy a playback vtr which is the proper tool for frequent use.

[Pat McGowan] “What is available at the HDX900 camera firewire port? Is it 100 mbps DVCPRO HD?”

I mirror all of tony’s comments
    but to answer the question
Yes it is ONLY DVCPROHD out of the FW port (but think data to a firestore with a tape backup)

Thanks guys but I will be buying a 1400 series deck for digitizing.

Thinking about workflow in the field. Capturing to a laptop and pre-editing. That sort of thing.

So, the port delivers 100 mbps DVCHD only? Or can it be set for other data streams?

Hmmm, data to a firestore. This might be interesting but it would only be native 100 mbps DVCPRO HD streamed via firewire not MXF, correct?

it’s HD only –what other data streams are there?? the camera only shoots 720 and 1080 HD to tape only –
Not SD and not MXF (that is data from the P2 format – not this camera)

Well Gary, there are lots of other data streams that might be possible (anamorphic DV, letterboxed DV) etc.. I see that the SDI output of this camera is supposed to support HD and SD output so I’m wondering if the same might hold true at the 1394 port.

    Pat,
But I have said a number of times ( 2X in this message thread) that the FW port is only HD.
I was working with HDX900 Model# 00001 last week as part of the demo’s at FletcherChicago.

The camera only supports a standard HD as DVCPROHD /100 MBPS over the FW port and nothing else. The camera can support HDSDI, SDI and Composite out of the Video port but only HD out of the FW port.

[jordan82] “Does anybody know if you will be able to simultaneously record 1080 23.38 to a FireStore drive AND to tape???”

    Yes and No

Yes you can capture whatever format you choose to shoot to the Firestore and to a tape at the same time.

The HDX900 lays 1080i60 to tape– so the format on the firestore would be the same.
You would have to use the pulldown removal in your NLE to get to a 23.98 psf video file.

XDCamHD does it the exact same way- only giving 1080i60 out the FW and SDI ports.
