advice for web and dvd content
I really need some advice regarding optimization of material intened for web and dvd.
so, my source materials are dvx100b shot in 24p mode and telecined transfer of 16mm film. I’m trying to figure out how to get the best quality images for outputting to the web. interlacing has been a problem so i’m trying to figure the best approach to dealing with material with the least amount of degradation. its my understanding that if i de-interlace the material that will reduce banding and such but at the expense of resolution. i’m willing to do the necessary work if thats what it takes.
Or, in other words if you had material shot on dvx100b and telecined 16mm film, how would you set up your workflow to output for the web and dvds? i’m using FCP too!

These really are two different mediums that require different solutions depending on what you want/need. Yes, 24p content does (IMHO)”look better” on the web, though the compression scheme you use to convert your content for the web is perhaps MORE important that whether or not you’re using 24p. You should bone up on what compressing content for web use is all about by taking a look at this book.

There is much to consider, perhaps too much for a few simple paragraphs here. I would simply encourage you to recognize the fact that what might work for DVD, my not be the best for the web, and vice-versa.

Yep- I would work at 24p for both. The telecined 16mm footage you can make 24p with CinemaTools. It ain’t easy but it’s doable. I show how to do this as well as get DVX100 footage into 24p for web on my DVX100 DVD- might be a worthwhile purchase for ya.

I’m not sure why you’d have to worry about interlacing with the dvx 100 24p footage. That should be progressive already isn’t it?
For stuff to look good on the web I export using h264 at 15 fps with a bit rate of 500 kbs 320×240. For the audio use AAC and set it to mono. This will give you a small file and a nice looking image.

I know it says iMovie, but I use these settings in FCP.
