What do I download from Panasonic?
Posted by Kirk Weston on June 23, 2008 at 4:37 pmOK, this is probably a case of too much information.
I just bought the HVX-200a. It’s fresh out of the box, and I’ve done some test shooting before my trip. I now need to know what the heck to download. The Panasonic site is a mess, and between that, the included CD, and ALL the conflicting info on the web, I’m confused.
I’m planning on dl’ing the P2CMS. I assume I need the latest driver for my Macbook Pro, too. Is that it?
Thanks,
KirkFYI:
Planning to offload via firewire from camera to G-RAID mini in the field. Then transferring to CalDigital Firewire VS mirrored at end of day. May also need to ingest via Dual Adapter if camera is still shooting with other P2 cards. Not planning to buy P2Log… not spending another dime. Also, not planning to edit on FCP in the field… will be editing on G5 later.

You need the P2 card driver for your computer. And if you aren’t spending another dime, then P2CMS is a good thing to get. Too bad P2 Genie for Mac went away…that was the best inexpensive way to offoad the cards. I myself like P2 Log…but I know your feelings on that.
How do you plan on offloading the clips? Powerbook with PCMCIA slot? MacBook Pro with Duel Systems adapter? Hooking the camera up to the computer?

June 23, 2008 at 7:01 pmI can always count on you two.
Noah, looking forward to watching the Callbox Live dvd.
Shane, it was a pleasure meeting you and picking your brain at CineGear Expo.
Then is the P2PCCard Install.pkg on the included CD-rom only for PowerBooks??
As much as I’d love to get the P2Log, the forecast is calling for rain every day I’m down there. The $200 will have to go toward the PortaBrace rain gear for the HVX-200a. That is, of course, unless I hear tons of raves about the advantage of P2Log to my workflow.
1) I will be offloading directly from camera to Macbook Pro (G-RAID mini 500 – bus powered) when at all possible.
2) Then, back at base I will transfer to CalDigital FirewireVS with ChronoSync possibly(?).
Or can P2CMS do this transfer between hdd’s just as effectively?
3) Only when the camera is in use, I will use the Duel-Adapter to ingest to that same drive setup. Thanks,

June 23, 2008 at 7:28 pmHi Shane,
Hope you don’t mind me jumping in on this…
I guess I’ll be starting off with the P2CMS as well, even though I can sure spend a dime or thow if there’s software that have features that P2CMS does not.
My first thing will be to hook the camera up using USB/FireWire. Then dump the P2 contents (using P2CMS or any software you or anyone recommend) onto disk #1. That disk is put on the shelf.
Then I dump it again onto disk #2, which will be my video disk.
But here’s the tricky one: Let’s say that I don’t use all the P2 footage in FCP Log and Transfer? Seems a bit waste to have unused footage on the video/project disk. Is it better to use Log and Transfer from disk #1 onto disk #2 (set as capture disk in FCP) and go from there?

I drag and drop from the Finder…but I hear some people discourage that. Works for me every time…and is free.

OK…if you do that then you will be using something like RAYLIGHT or other software that allows FCP to read those file natively, right?

Yup…That is why I use LOG and TRANSFER. Well, that and I can name my clips. But I bring in only what I need…which does tend to be almost everything. Just not the 2-3 second garbage shots that happen on occasion. But I always offload to a drive on set, then transfer to my main archive drives in the hotel or at the office. Then import the footage into FCP using Log and Transfer.

June 23, 2008 at 10:19 pmOne IMPORTANT habit to always do.
ALWAYS write protect the P2 card before you mount it to the Mac.
BTW – I use the Duel-Adapter and it works fine. Fastest transfer and very reasonably priced.

I read that too – that’s why I’m asking what to use. I have just made a quick test and it did work fine.

Oops – must I? My idea was that to Log and transfer the footage I want to use to my video disk (disk #2) but only the desired footage. But it looks like it’s easier that from disk #1 use Log and Transfer onto disk #2.
Here’s my idea of workflow:
1. Copy P2 content onto disk #1 and disk #3 (using Finder or P2CMS or similar)
2. Set up disk #2 as capture scratch for FCP.
3. Use Log and Transfer from disk #1 (or disk #3) to copy footage for FCP onto disk #2.4. Put disk #1 and disk #3 on the shelf.
5. Start editing.
(if something happens, it hopefully will be easy to re-connect the media on disk #1 or disk #3).

June 24, 2008 at 8:23 amHave you tested differences in speed comparing the Duel, FireWire and USB? We are planning on buy a Mac Pro, so I’m interested to know if the cost for a Duel when not having a MacBook Pro is worth the cost. (If you have a MacBook Pro, the Duel is mandatory, right?)

Not if your storage is eSATA. I have a P2 store that I use for my card reader. Eventually, we will get the 5 card slot reader that is fw800.
