  • DOES FCP 6 EDIT MXF NATIVELY?

Posted by Jim Blokland on May 22, 2007 at 6:52 pm

    Hi COW-ers:

Just wondering if FCP 6 still makes Quicktime copies of the MXF files upon import, or if it now edits MXF files natively?

    Thanks in advance.

    Best, JIM.

Note, however, that Raylight is coming to the Mac and will facilitate this.

Raylight is currently a PC plugin that enables MXF/HVX editing on Premiere and Vegas. It is not available for Mac–yet.

    (ps google works wonders.) 🙂

I’ve used Raylight in Premiere with MXF files, and I always have to render the files in Premiere before they’ll play realtime. This may be a limitation of my system; I don’t know for sure because I don’t use Premiere very often. Seems to take about the same amount of time to render a file in Premiere that it takes to import the file into FCP, so not a great timesaver for me. Does anyone have different experience with Raylight, i.e. native support and realtime playback in Premiere?

Not in Premiere, but in Vegas I get realtime playback in Red, Yellow or Green mode. Not realtime in Blue mode, but in the other modes it plays back realtime, just drag ‘n’ drop to the timeline and play…
