Reliablilty of p2 transfer in field
One concern I have about P2 or firestore is that there is no way to monitor your transfer from camera to the P2 store drive or firestore device on set. Since this is a new technology it concerns me.
Example: You shoot 2-8 gig p2 cards and then lay them off to P2 store drive. You will not know whether it really x-fered with no problems until you can play the material back from an edit machine/laptop or unless you can lay it off to a deck. Very time consuming. Yes you can play it in camera, but it is x-ferring out of the camera that has me worried.
My interest is in using this camera for a documentary when a working a couple of firestore or equivalent drives when released. But same problem. How do I 100% know that it x-fered properly if I can’t monitor easily on set? Especially when i would be dealing with 100gigs of data. Is the only solution to have a laptop on set?

You could throw ’em into a laptop instead and use the free software from Panasonic to scrub through your clips. That’s how it was shown to us today (we had a sales dude swing thru, since we’re looking into P2) on a laptop. The guy didn’t have a camera with him because, well, they’re hard to come by 🙂 But the software looks slick.

How did you look at the P2 files on the laptop. Did you have to import them into a NLE? Which I’m sure is time consuming.
What if you had a firestore or cineporter drive? (down the road)
Could you just hook that up to a laptop and scroll through the P2 files?
Don’t they have to be imported into Final Cut Pro or Avid X-press pro? -
The rep that I talked to (equipment vendor, not Panasonic) had a program installed on his laptop that he said is a free download from Panasonic. It had a video window, playback/scrub controls, metadata screen, and hot list. I don’t remember the other cool features. One thing that was amazing was how much metadata is stored with these clips…it’s crazy!
Anyway, since I’m needling this vendors hard to find an affordable HD solution that also complements our workflow, he showed us how this application would allow our project manager in the field to do view the video and do their shot selection without tying up the camera. It was pretty slick. And the price is right.

If you use the camera to offload a card directly to a firewire drive, the camera has the ability to perform a verification step (where it re-reads the info off the drive and compares it to the card, to make sure it got there).
I believe the P2 Store has the same capability, although not sure.
