  Animate 1500 objects?

  I would like to animate 1500 copies of an icon.

  1. The 1500 icons should appear one by one in a grid formation.
  2. Each icon should be colored individually.

  Questions?

  1. Is this at all possible? Is Scripting the way to go?
  2. Should I create layers or can I somehow use a repeater and access instances programmatically?
  3. How do I keep the computer responsive with so many elements on the screen?

  Have you created the icon in AE using Shape layers or is it a file that you have imported?

  1. Is this at all possible?

  Yes, It is possible to do so.

  
  Is Scripting the way to go?

  If you have used shape layers then it would be possible to create this using repeater.
  If it is a file that you have imported then you can use expressions to animate the position, opacity and cycle the colors.

  You can also use Red Giant’s Echospace Plugin.
  
  3. How do I keep the computer responsive with so many elements on the screen?

  It depends on the size of document, system specs and effects that you will use.

  In addition to Vishesh’s suggestions, I suggest you look at Trapcode Form and Trapcode Particular.

  Form can easily produce a grid of icons each with a different color. Though how you are going to generate 1500 distinct colors may be more of an issue.
