  • Intermittent output from Decklink card

I have a Decklink Extreme PCIe SD card in a Quad G5 2.5Ghz Mac with 4GB RAM, ATTO UL5D SCSI. SDI connected to SD monitor and patched to Sony DVW-A500P Digi Beta deck. Decklink SPDIF audio connected to Flying Cow analog converter, then to powered speakers.

Since purchase the audio and video output has occasionally dropped out – audio mutes and picture turns to noise. Wiggling the Decklink cable at the card-end connector generally fixed the problem. Over the past 3 months the problem has greatly increased in frequency to the point where the system is barely usable now – picture and audio are almost impossible to keep stable.

It seems logical that this is either a problem with the Decklink card itself or the breakout cable. Any suggestions of what my options are, other than throw it out and buy a new one? Is there a cable replacement option or something? I’ve posted Support Requests on the Blackmagic site but as yet have had no response.

    Hi,

Yes, we do have a cable replacement option. In instances like this, it’s highly probably that the cable is faulty, however, it’s also possible that the connector on the card is bad. I would recommend swapping out both card and cable. Support should get back to you about this. I’ll check what’s going on.

might just be a sync issue also. is your dbc on input reference? and is there any signal on the input side of the card. simple sync issues can cause issues like that. dead patch the input side of the card and throw the dbc on input ref. its worth a try..

Thanks for the suggestion, but this is one of 4 systems all running house sync. The other systems are all problem-free, and if I swap out this card to a different system the problem moves with the card. (The other machines use Decklink Extreme HD cards, so I can’t do a cable comparison, unfortunately).

Kristian – greatly appreciate any info you can provide re: a cable replacement.

Just a final post to say this issue WAS a card or cable fault and is now resolved. I was contacted by Blackmagic US and directed to my local Australian distributor. I sent the card on Monday and have received a brand new replacement on Thursday.

I couldn’t ask for better service from Blackmagic – many thanks!
