  • Still No Solution For OFFLINE RES PLAYBACK???

Posted by Bryan Hargrave on May 9, 2007 at 7:40 am

I’ve been working with the offline RT resolution. My sequence is set for blackmagic 8bit NTSC 29.97 playback. What I get in my monitor is a verticly strethced image. Top and bottom stretch but side to side stay at the original 320 resolution. Offline res is 320 x 240 photo jpeg. I’m currently working on a clients system with the Kona 3. I’m having no problem with my settings, the image is stretched into the screen on all sides. I REALLY WANT TO KNOW IF ANY OTHER DECKLINK USERS ARE HAVING THIS PROBLEM???

On my home system I’ve worked around the problem by using an old sony firewire converter, to get my video feed. But I’d really like to know why my decklink isn’t doing the job.

    Thanks,

    Hi Bryan,

The Blackmagic Offline RT was never supposed to play out to an external monitor. In fact you’ll find the Blackmagic Offline RT settings are set to External video – none. It’s been that way for years and I don’t expect that will change now as Offline RT is so rare these days.

Most DeckLink users would use the Blackmagic NTSC JPEG or Blackmagic PAL JPEG for their offline work as it is very efficient for disk storage but monitoring is at broadcast quality as we set the compression to High so it’s beautiful to watch.

I’d be interested to know if you feel that Offline RT is still important and, if so, why? You’re using a G5 and a Huge disk array which is plenty fast enough for SD work so I’m curious as to why you might want to use Offline RT as it seemed far more relevant 5+ years ago when systems were slower and disk storage slower and more expensive.

The reason why this problem came up was that my client digitized the material at offline RT. Which is Jpeg but at 320 x240 35% quality. It was 9 features so it was 18 hours of source material. For my work around I used my old sony converter box (which I used back on FCP 1.2.5 way back when) which has firewire to analog outputs to my Beta SP and then to the monitor.

When I dig. for offline cuts I usually use DV res. for low res. I don’t think that offline RT is that usefull now, but the Kona 3 plays out the offline RT just fine. The Decklink Extreme is playing it stretched vertically. It doesn’t seem like it would be a big deal to fix this problem???

    Hi Bryan,

Thanks for letting me know about why your client needed to work with OfflineRT material. It would be nice if the engineers enabled preview for OfflineRT but I just can’t see it happening as there are so many other popular features that they want to add as well as keeping up with new versions of software including Final Cut Pro and Leopard. I wouldn’t rule it out as I agree that it shouldn’t be hard to add but it’s just a matter of time and and the number of people requesting each feature.

Thanks so much for your response. It would be a very nice function for Blackmagic. But I do realize that there’s a lot going on currently with Apple. Just keep in mind that the Offline RT seems to work faster and render faster. In cases of extreme amounts of footage it’s a nice option to have for editing. I feel that in most cases DV res. is the best offline res. As for myself, I’ve found the work around from my little trusty 7 year old Sony DV to Analog Converter.

    Thanks

    Hi Bryan,

I hear you and I’m glad you’ve found a workaround with your trusty old convertor.
