compress from timelime vs. quicktime
How does one get a better quality DVD?
Export an MPEG2 from the FCP timeline or export a same settings QT and make MPEG2 of that?
If QT, reference or self contained?
I am using Compressor.

Kinda depends on the source- if it’s HDV for example- definitely do not recompress with current settings. Also depends if there’s a downconversion involved first. If I’m coming from 720p DVCPROHD for example I typically go to 16:9 SD ProRes HQ first out of FCP and then convert to MPEG-2 in Compressor. As far as how to get better looking final DVDs- that depends a lot on the level of quality of the source footage. Also Compressor itself is not the only MPEG-2 encoder. There’s also Bitvice, Cinecraft, etc.

My Source is 23.98 DVCPROHD 1280×1080 16:9.

Then pretty much same workflow I’ve outlined above would do the trick.

I will give it a try.
But it seems odd to me to introduce another codec (prores) into it. -
It’s what I do but you can compare results to Uncompressed as well. The most important thing is the downconvert anyway. To go directly from DVCPROHD in FCP into Compressor with the downconversion ties up FCP forever with not much difference in quality.
