Apple iDVD with hdv Timeline – so many artifacts!
I am using Avid Adrenaline MC 4.04 and working with hdv timelines I want to send to iDVD for it’s slick menus and overall simplicity, but it’s hit or miss. Sometimes the DVD plays beautifully, and other times I get all sorts of artifacts and nasty jagged lines and boxes. I cannot understand why it works great one day, and like garbage on another! It’s super frustrating and a massive time-waster. Help!!! Here’s what I’m doing . . . I export my Timeline as an 864 x 486 16:9 Quicktime movie using the Apple h.264 codec at BEST setting. (I sometimes use MPEG 4 codec without better luck). The QTs themselves always play perfectly in Quicktime player (running version 7.6.4), and look like a million bucks. When dropping the file into iDVD to make a disc, I use the professional export setting, and generally use the 8x write speed (slower write speeds including 1X do not work any better and changing the quality settings do not lead to any better reliability on whether I get artifacts). That’s it! Sometimes the DVD plays like a widescreen masterpiece with no artifacts or funny abnormalities, and other times I want to eat my cuticles off as I count the alien artifacts (usually a handful of 5-8 very noticeable ones) in my 10 – 15 minute film. The Quicktime files are usually about 500 MB in size. On another note, I cannot get my Adrenaline to export Same As Source even though I used to be able to do that. I am running MC 4.04 on a 2 x 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon Mac. Re-exporting new Quicktime files sometimes helps and sometimes does not. Eventually I can usually get one to play correctly, but it can take multiple burns and reviews and is mind numbing and depressingly slow. I know I can do this with Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro and Sorenson, but am looking for direction from someone who can get professional results on iDVD (running iDVD version 7.0.4) Does anyone have a bullet proof work flow for Avid Adrenaline HDV timelines and iDVD? Anybody? Anywhere?? Are you out there? Thank you, thank you, and yes – please feel free to send me your suggestions for doing this a better and easier way entirely as well. Jerry in Miami
