I have been editing on AVID since ’91, and have used the various upgrades along the way. I am now cutting on Adrenaline in DV 25 and am getting ready to start a lengthy documentary project. At the end of the project, I’m handing it over to 2 supervising editors who cut on Meridian on 20:1 or 10:1. They would perfer that I cut on Meridian, too, because they are afraid that the two systems won’t be compatible. (Perhaps like they’ve been burned in the past.) They request that the media be delivered on a firewire drive.

I’ve been working on this project for several years on my Xpress Pro at DV 25 and had planned to move to Adrenaline when we’re ready to go full-steam ahead. So my questions are:

    1. Will they be able to work with the media I’ve already digitized at DV25 if I transcode it to 10:1?

    2. Do you forsee any problems if I cut this on Adrenaline or Xpress Pro in their preferred resolution, and then take my media, bins and sequence to them to load on their Meridian from a firewire drive?

    3. I’m using Moving Picture for my stills animation so I’m hoping this will also translate.

I want to make the transition as seamless as possible for them but I haven’t been able to find many rental options for a Meridian system.

    Thanks for your help!

Always check before ingesting large amounts of stuff, but nevertheless:

If you create OMF media rather than MXF, everything should work out just fine.

No idea about Moving Picture though, i don’t even know what it is…

What Bouke says: OMF, not MXF.
Moving Picture: they will need to have that plugin installed, and you’ll need to make sure that this will work across different versions. I would not bet on it, but maybe it works.
Bins and sequences should travel across, but do create new projects on the Meridien, that’s probably safer.
I’ve brought projects, bins and sequences back and forth between PC Meridien v12 and Mac XpressPro 4.8 for a while and that never caused any issues.

Export Quicktime movies (in the Avid Meridien codec) of your still sequences, just in case the Moving Picture stuff does not work. In my experience, the plug in a bit finicky about moving files, and compatibility between versions. Be prepared for it not to work at all, and be pleasantly surprised if it does.
