Audio Stuttering on Capture Playback
So I recently installed a fresh new copy of Windows XP onto my internal 500gb Harddrive. I am working on Avid Media Composer v2.8. Previously I was running the same thing, only I was running XP on an external harddrive connected via SATA. Had no problems then. But in my current set up, I’ve just logged into avid and the problems have begun.
Via my firewire, I have my panasonic PV-DC152D. It’s a pretty old consumer camcorder, but I have used it before to capture footage without a single problem. The cable I am using has also been used previously, no problems.
My problem begins when I go into Capturing mode within Avid. Even before I capture, I get audio stuttering on playback of my DV tape. I tried capturing as well, to my external 750gb SATA drive with no luck. Well, it captured, but all the audio was stuttering. So the problem begins even before I capture, just on watching my footage.
My project sample rate is 32khz. Sample Bit Depth 16 Bit. I have tried selecting only one audio channel. I have tried turning off the video channel and only capture audio, both for one and two channels.
Here is where I am most confused. I get into Windows Movie Maker, capture, and everything is fine. Flawless audio. No Stuttering. If it weren’t for this I would assume it was my cable or something. But everything captured fine on Windows Movie Maker.
I have no other firewire units plugged in. I have no USB units plugged in. I have tried disabling virus software. I am running on bare minnimum. I guess I am mostly fed up because when I was running XP on my external, I never had this problem while capturing. But now the problem has just sort of popped up for no reason.

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU @ 2.66GHz (4 CPUs), ~2.9GHz
4 Gigs of Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX
SoundBlaster Audigy SE
Windows XP
Media Composer 2.8If there is any other information that could possible help someone determine my problem, please let me know. I have come to my wits end on fixing the numerous problems I encounter while using Avid. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You say it’s a fresh install of Windows XP. What version of Quicktime are you running? Also, did you optimize XP? Turn off simple file sharing, check the driver for your graphics card, turn off screen saver, set the power mode to always on, etc…?
A fresh install is great, but sometimes the little things you did with your last install get missed when you reinstall.
Also, what kind of drive is the internal 500GB? Is it a SATA drive, IDE, 5,400RPM, 7,200RPM? This might make a difference.

My internal is a SATA 7200 RPM. Power is set to always.
I am currently not at my editing machine, so I will have to check everything else. I did downgrade my quicktime, to what version I can’t remember at the moment. I will check this tonight when I return home. But until then, do you have any other minor suggestions that I might be missing? It really just looks like an interference or conflict with Avid, so if there are any other things you can think of that could cause that, please let me know. I know it has something to do with Avid since I have used windows movie maker and Adobe Premeir with no problems.
I will get back to you on all the things you suggested and let you know how that affects it. If there is anything else you can think of to turn off, please let me know.
Could the cluster (forgive the incorrect term? possibly?) or byte size of the drive have anything to do with it? When I formatted my drive I think I set it to default.

You know, I’m not really sure what else to suggest. I had a smiliar problem capturing MiniDV footage. Sometimes everything would come in perfectly, then I’d capture the next clip and when I played it back the audio would be warbled. Or I’d hit Capture and as the tape played the audio would be messed up.
Unfortunately, I never did figure out what caused it. If I hit the warbly audio problem I’d shut the machine down, start it back up, and capture another tape. The next day I’d come back to the bad tape and it would capture fine. Seemed very random, and this was on a brand new system, full Avid spec, with all the OS tweaks. Frustrating, isn’t it?
I hope you figure it out or it clears itself up, and please let us know if you find a solution.

So I am using Quicktime version 7.1.6. I’ve updated my video card driver. I turned off any system monitoring, file indexing, system restore, automatic updates, virus software, all start up programs, all services, adjusted processor scheduling, adjusted memory usage, increased the size of my paging file, turned off my paging file, turned off my screen saver, and eliminated all appearance settings for XP.
Still stutters.
So, because doing all this is absolutely ridiculous just to get a program to do what its supposed to do, I’ve officially given up. As much as I would like to use Avid, it obviously doesn’t want me using it. So I vow to never edit on a PC again. I’m buying a Mac, and I’m buying Final Cut Pro.

I’m just going through the same thing,except the video is stuttering. Had a new drive installed and it worked ok for a day… so that’s it for me, it will be the last PC I ever own… It’s Mac time and FC Pro!!!
