  • what’s your workflow (hvx 200)?

My question to all you HVX 200 shooters out there is: what is your workflow from getting the .mxf’s files either from the P2 cards or the Firestore into the AVID (without the AVID crashing) and editing in AVID and also outputting to AE to do green screen ect. and bringing that back into AVID to output to a deck?

We shoot SD and HD (HD only for the green screen) but the final output is SD DV25.
We use AVID Adrenilines hooked up to Beta and DVC Pro decks in a news enviroment.

When ever we have AVID open and plug the HVX 200 into the computer AVID crashes. Any experience with that too?

Avid automatically scans external busses; it’s constantly updating its database of files. If yours crashes when you plug a device with P2 files into it, best to just kill the app before plugging in (IMO).

You didn’t say what version software you use. We use recent enough versions of MC and Xpress Pro (5.7 & 2.7.5) to have the “import P2 clips/media” function. Implementation is so-so.

Sometimes after I’ve imported the media in one session, I have to restart the Avid (and often delete the P2 folder in Avid’s application folder) before I can import other P2 media. And I have had imported media clips mysteriously go “offline”. Once it begins consolidating I no longer have problems with it crashing, however. Overall, I’m hoping Avid improves the stability of the process.

We are running Media Composer 2.6.8 as far as I know it doesn’t have an import p2 button/option (I’ve worked more with Final Cut than Avid so I learn a new trick everyday on these things).
So far we have been transfering the .mxf’s into an obscure folder burried deep within Avids project structure on the Raid Array because that’s only folder in the system that Avid will recognize .mxf’s for some reason, we can’t even rename them. Then we disconnect the camera and load up Avid. Then we can find the files via the media tool and import them into the timeline and edit. If we need to do some keying or whatever in AE we export a quicktime reference.

I have heard people complaining about media files appearing offline and such and Avid not finding all the files. I haven’t experienced that personally. Some of my coworkers have expressed interest in pulling the clips onto the timeline from the camera itself which they claim they have seen, but that doesn’t make sense to me because if you someone needs the camera when your editing your screwed. But since Avid crashes when the camera is on it’s impossible anyways.

I have been searching high and low and I have realy only found complaints about this.
So any advice or workflow wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I only use OMF written to a Firestore, not MXF and P2 cards. I did have initial problems, but once I figured out the workflow, its been golden.

The Avid DOES have to be off. In the firestore, it is very important to organize your media. If you do not do this (either OMF or MXF) the footage will not be found. I plug the Firestore into the front of an HP 8xxx series computer. Once the drive shows up, I’ll start up Avid. The Avid will scan the Firestore, and then go to the projects. I select my project, and go into the media tool. Select the Firestore, and any folders you want to open. At this point, using DV25 footage, I can use the Firestore as a media drive (I’ve even done a digital cut with the DV25 footage still on the Firestore). Once I’ve edited, I consolidate the sequence so that the media I used from the Firestore gets transferred to the internal media drives. I’ve even opened the media drive where my footage is and dragged it into a bin in the Avid. It will ask if I want to associate the common audio / video files.

The majority of my P2 experience has been on a PC XPro 4.5 – just last week we upgraded to 5.7 on a Mac. The devil is in the details. Once you get those sorted out, you’ll wonder why you didn’t go tapeless in the first place.

Interesting, we typically don’t use the firestore very often as we are usually only recording at most 10 minutes of material for use in 5-30 second promos. So it’s just been easier to record to cards then have to bother with bolting on the firestore. I might have to look into that though.
