Is DV25 411 equal to 1-1?
Posted by Chaz Shukat on July 5, 2007 at 11:44 pmI’ve taken over a project on an Xpress Pro that has been digitized at DV25 411. They tell me that’s how it’s going to be broadcast on cable network, no up-rezzing! Say’s they’ve done this before. Is this kosher? Is it an “online” resolution?
Also, how do you bring up the scopes on the Xpress Pro? They tell me they exist but I can’t seem to find them.
Thanks,

July 6, 2007 at 12:01 amYou can bring up your scopes by clicking on “Tools/Video Input.”
You can also see either a waveform or vectorscope as one of the windows in your color correction toolset.

July 6, 2007 at 2:05 amJoe, the first thing I checked was the tools. There is no video input under tools. This is an Xpress Pro, not a MC. As for the color correction, I’ve looked all over that interface, don’t see how to bring up scopes.

July 6, 2007 at 2:36 amyou really need external scopes but as Joe mentioned you can use the scopes in the video input tool while capturing.
DV25 is 5:1 compression in a 4:1:1 color space. It is not an online quality but it is aired everyday. “broadcast quality” is a relative term as 4th generation vhs is broadcasted. Doesn’t make it pretty… just makes it a matter of opinion as to what is aired. To me it depnds on only the sunbject matter but each network has their own set of rules.

July 6, 2007 at 4:37 amExternal scopes are always the preferred choice.
From memory the Tools/Video option only appears if you are connected to a Mojo. Sort of makes sense – without a Mojo you’re only outputting to DV unless you have an AJA/Black Magic card etc.

July 6, 2007 at 1:03 pmI don’t have a Mojo. If there is a way, please be very specific as to what and where and how because I still don’t see any way to bring up scopes, Video Tool menu or, color correction mode or otherwise.
Thanks for the enlightenment on the DV25 411. I didn’t think it was equivalent of 1-1 as I was being told.

In a sense, it IS 1:1. DV is compressed 5:1 IN THE CAMERA/DECK. The Avid is not adding any compression when you capture it. Recapturing 1:1 will not make it any better, if it was DV to start with. It cannot be “uprezzed”…it is what it is. Just set your renders to 1:1 in the Media Creation settings and your effects and graphics will improve by not recompressing as DV.

July 6, 2007 at 3:02 pmGreat post John, that clears up a lot for me. 1-1 means no compression, even if its DV quality, which I’m not used to thinking of as “online” quality.
BTW, is DV25 411 different than just plain old DV25?

July 6, 2007 at 5:35 pmDV25 411 = DV25, yes, they are the same.
Toolset–> Color Correction to bring up your scopes.

July 6, 2007 at 8:01 pmOK, I guess I’m not being clear enough about the scopes. I don’t mean the color correction scopes, I mean regular video scopes (that let you check and see if you are within broadcast limits) and vector scopes. :-}

July 7, 2007 at 3:54 amThat’s what I mean too :-> Chaz, in the hidden triangle dropdown of the color scopes(histogram and parade), you can choose Y, YC, and a vectorscope. Additionally, depending on your version of Xpress, there is a broadcast legalizer plugin. Check for all this in the help file. Of course, there is no substitute for a good hardware scope. But, this is better than nothing.
