DVD firewire into/out Adrenaline
Posted by Ken Altshuler on March 16, 2007 at 8:15 pmI am looking for a DVD player/recorder that has Firewire (1394) input/output to use in an Adrenaline system. Seems to be a lot that use firewire input, but component out. Although it would be nice, I do not need deck control, it can all be done manually. Any suggestions? Thanks

March 16, 2007 at 8:49 pmI just sold a Philips DVR985 on eBay (for a paltry amount) that had firewire but also had and component inputs and outputs. Another feature: Audio record level adjustments and VU meters. The only drawback for me is that it was a +R machine.
I recently bought a Pioneer DVR-533H, once again on eBay, that has firewire I/O and a hard drive. You should be able to find similar.

March 16, 2007 at 10:28 pmAccording to what I found, the Pioneer unit does not write to DVD+R. Is this the case? I am interested in a unit that will write to both DVD+/DVD- R. Are you familiar with the SONY DRX 830? Also, I was told that if there is a firewire port that it is bi-directional. Is that true?

March 17, 2007 at 1:37 amYes, the Pioneer is only -R.
I’m not familiar with that Sony. A friend of mine has the Sony RDR-GX300, and it is bi-directional.
Just because a unit has FW doesn’t mean it’s bi-directional. I have other recorders, and they don’t play nice with my Avid systems.

March 19, 2007 at 4:44 pmJoe, thanks for the input. I thought this was going to be simple, but as with most compuetr related things, it is not.
The SONY RDR-GX-355, which is the new version of the one you mentioned, appears to be the right one. -

I hope you can hear from someone that the 355 is truly bi-directional. The newer Pioneers seem to have taken away the ability to “talk” with Avid systems.
