Well, ole bessy finally kicked the bucket.
She was one tough workhorse. Made me some money and tought me alot about patience. Simply the crabbiest dang Avid I have ever touched in my life, including life on the road as a nationwide freelancer. I loved her dearly though.

On the bright side of things, Keene and John Connery Jr at Midwest Media Group hooked me up like towtruck with a

    a

    (more drumroll)

    a brand new

    (more drum roll)

a new AdrenalineHD system with sapphires!
yeah thats right, I’m gettin an Adrenaline. I don’t hate it anymore. At least after milkin ole bessy all this time.
The cool fellas offered me an outstanding price I can’t repeat on a DS Nitris system and if it were just up to me, that’s what I’d go with but honestly, my workflow doesn’t require the cost difference. Matter of fact, I shot alot of HDV so Adrenaline is just a better fit. I’m lookin forward to tearin into it. The groovy Kane from Midwest Media Group will be in da house next week gettin me all set up and ready rock.

While these things never happen at a good time, I told myself when I bought the symphony that if I got two years of use out of it (it was waaaay used) I’d be cool. I got three and was still pissed when it died. I was all like “nooooooooo!” in a bad horror movie as she went even though I knew that could be at any minute from the time I purchased it.
    Go figure.

I can’t say enough great things about Midwest Media Group. They simply aim to please.

I’ll post some pics late next week of the new suite.

A moment of silence for “Ole Bessy.”

    ………
    ………
    ………

There, now that that’s done, I have to wonder what she died of? Was she as Hillbilly as you, Grin? 😛

Also, I have to wonder which is more extraordinary: that “Ole Bessy” lasted as long as she did, or that Grinner was able to make a comfy living on an old Symphony 3.1 for several years? I’m a firm believer in the mantra “It’s not the tool you use, but the end product that counts” (heck, I sign all my posts with it over at the Avid forums), but that’s still pretty incredible!

Congrats on your new toy, Grinner. You’ll love the Adrenaline. It’s come a long way from its 1.0 version–buggy as hell. Now they’re a down-right pleasant product to edit with. I miss mine. If I can ever get settled down and get my business going again, I’ll buy another one in a heartbeat! I think you’ll find the new SpectraMatte a suitable replacement for Ultimatte (if you even had it in “Ole Bessy”), plus lots of other great features. The integrated BCC is nice, too.

Also gotta wonder what converted you to the Adrenaline camp and soothed your hatred toward it? You definitely had it in for it (and seemingly Avid) for quite a while.

Lookin’ forward to seeing those pics, dude. I’m jealous!!

well it was that v1.0 that had me riled up. Should not have been released at all, imo but heck, if people wanna pay to beta test their stuff, they’d be fools not to let em. I don’t have it in for Avid. I just know they can do better than what they are right now. Same can be said for many companies. Truth is, after all the dust settled, a current Avid product was still the best fit for me. Don’t misunderstand this as me saying, “man, Adrenaline rules now.” I know better. I’m just looking at what I need and what I can afford. Adrenaline just kept coming up. I know the interface, I shoot HDV and I didn’t wanna spend more than 30k with trade in. It was either Adrenaline or FCP at this point.
If I didn’t have clients behind me I would have (without any thought at all) gone with a nice FCP setup.
Thats not a knock at FCPs stability…. more at my own comfort level between the two apps.
I’m excited. I look at it as being in a rebuilt old Charger all this time and now getting new Charger SRT8… 4 doors is kinda funky but it hauls ass and doesn’t break down as much. I know I’d be embarrassed if I challenged a Viper so I simply wont do that but I have new tires that are ready to be smoked.

    Grin,

Once you get it installed, let us know about the overal stability. General complaints I’ve heard are slowness with the HD card during capture (even when you’re just capturing SD). Also occasional loss of communication to the Adrenaline chassis. If these issues are gone, it would be great to hear that dispelled. Thanks.

    Sincerely,
    Oliver

    Grin,

Congrats on the new aquisition. The online bay at work ,formerly a Symphony (I forget which version, but it was on OSX, 10.1, I believe) now it’s an adrenaline 1.6. The difference in performace speed is amazing.

Yes, it’s always the editor that makes something good, not the tool. But being able to import graphics in seconds instead of minutes, and not haing to render a sequence for HOURS will make you more money, because time is money. Also, I (heart) sapphire.

    Happy Editing!

Do you know if real time multicam works in the newest version? It didn’t before NAB.

Yes Multicam is working fine – even with mixed formats.

    Congrads Grin.

Bessie was a great partnet 🙂

Tip- Adrenaline interface moves much faster if you switch the video to Preview Quality. You get more RT streams and scrubbing is quicker. Difference in quality is actually much less than I expected.

    Congrads again.

yeah, I always thought that was as strange downgrade.
I’ll be pushin buttons on it by Tuesday evening. Otta have plenty of feedback pretty soon.
I have clients lining up to test it out so it’s gonna get plenty of action.
Considering the system I traded in, I don’t think I’ll be displeased with speed on the Adrenaline in HQ mode.

[grinner] “Considering the system I traded in, I don’t think I’ll be displeased with speed on the Adrenaline in HQ mode.”

    Grin,

I don’t mean speed in the HQ render mode, rather overall system responsiveness with the HD card installed, even in things like digitizing SD footage. You said it was an MCA HD, so I presume that includes the DNxHD I/O card, right.

    Oliver

    yeah it duz.
Still havn’t fired it up. I hear that respose is an issue… hitting stop and it trickles a bit and things like that. I don’t hit stop to make an in pont though so I’m hoping this doesn’t phase me a bit.
Still, all in all, it’s gotta be a breath of fresh air for me. If nothing else, I won’t be “hoping’ it makes it till the dubs are made. I’m bald as a result of my old symphony.
