Posted by Cold Ac on August 29, 2005 at 11:30 pmWhat’s the best way to get 24p video from an XL2 into Avid Media Composer? I have an S-Video Cable going through a BetaSP deck right now. Is there a better way? HELP PLEASE…

August 30, 2005 at 1:12 amI THINK YOU HAVE TO USE A FIREWIRE CABLE ATTACHED TO THE ADRENELINE, THEN CAPTURE.

August 30, 2005 at 1:26 amWhat kind of media composer? Adrenaline? 9000 Meridian?
I just brought 24p from an XL2 via firewire – works great. Audio, video, timecode, tape control… all through that teenie little copper.
Gollygeewillickers, we’ve come a long way from using casette tapes to store your Texas Instruments TI994A data. Remember those?

August 30, 2005 at 3:31 amI’ll try direct firewire. I just assumed Avid Media Composer 9000 Meridian had to be Component, Composite or Serial In

August 30, 2005 at 9:42 amYeah…the Meridian 9000 ain’t gonna recognize the firewire connection. Avid Express yes…Adrenaline, maybe (dunno, Meridian is as high as I go).
I don’t think you are gonna get the 24P footage into the Avid unless you dub to beta. And remember…24P footage is best worked with at 29.97. it is 24PA that really wants the 23.98 fps.
The Meridian only does 30 non-drop and 29.97 drop frame timecode editing, or straight up film 24fps. No 23.98.

August 30, 2005 at 12:15 pmLet’s please keep the facts straight… there is a lot of confusing information here…
1.) Only Xpress Pro HD and Media Composer Adrenaline HD can deal with FireWire directly.
Meridian has a FireWire card option, but does not work in 24fps.
2.) All versions of Media Composer since 1992 can deal with 24 frame capture (NORMAL) and manage the 24fps and 30fps timecode as well as 25, 25fps with pulldown, etc.
3.) Xpress Pro and Media Composer Adrenaline can capture both ADVANCED and NORMAL pulldown over FireWire or s-video, component, SDI, etc.
4.) Media Composer Adrenaline 2.1 and Xpress Pro 5.1 can capture NORMAL pulldown over FireWire in addition to ADVANCED
5.) Xpress Pro HD 5.0 can output either ADVANCED or NORMAL over FireWire, no need for Mojo.Xpress Pro HD and Media Composer Adrenaline HD introduced the Canon XL2 deck template since the camera did not exist before that time. Try using a generic NTSC template.
Your mail did not specify whether the DV material was shot NORMAL or ADVANCED. If NORMAL, you can use any system dating back to 1992 to work at 24fps. You can capture over analog or SDI (not FireWire). You need to log or capture on timecodes ending in 0 and 5. All material shot on these cameras at 24fps is always non drop (unless you male a dub to a drop frame source. In which case the Avid have always had the ability to capture 24 from a drop frame source as easily as a non drop source.
If you Meridian system does not have a 23.976 project, you need to capture your audio over analog out. The pulldown switch will be set to .99 in software when capturing audio that is referenced to NTSC.
Hopefully this makes things clearer… 😉

August 31, 2005 at 2:33 pmGood stuff, Michael.
Here’s my question: I have firewire/captured Panasonic dvx-100 24P masterclips into a 29.97 project. How can I verify that the footage is 24P advanced or 24P standard?

September 1, 2005 at 12:37 amIf you set the Film/24p settings to ADVANCED and use FireWire, and it is not ADVANCED, the system will bitch at you. If you feel the footage is correct in the timeline by playing it, you can track it pulldown cadence by displaying the CADENCE column in the bin.

September 3, 2005 at 9:08 pmThanks for those tips.
As I step one frame at a time in my 29.97 project, I find that every 5th
frame is a repeat of the fourth frame. Does this confirm that my source footage was shot in 24P Advanced? What are you saying about a 24P Project? Can I NOT import 24P Standard via firewire? Also- what should I do to my handful of 60i sources to get them into an avid 24 project?

September 4, 2005 at 11:40 amIt is difficult to tell in a 29.97 project whether the sources are ADVANCED or NORMAL because the viewer and client monitor only show one field when advancing and both will look like 4+1. Let me see if I can come up with a recipe – I am rarely in a 29.97 project.
You can capture NORMAL over FireWire in Xpress Pro 5.1.
The handful of 30i can be converted to 24p using the chart and preset I put up on my website:

September 4, 2005 at 5:06 pmThanks for your website and “24/7-24P” support, Michael.
I have stepped thru my 29.97 footage one frame at a time– it’s my understanding that all avids park on field2– could we
see an Advanced or Standard 24P distinction if we advanced one field at a time, instead? The link you provided for 60i Conversions to 24P uses “Fluid Motion”– is that now a feature of XproHD’s Timewarp?
