Converting Audio Files to Editable Text
I work as an instructional technologist at a community college and we have a big problem. I have instructors who want to use videos in their online classes, but we are required to close caption any media of that type that we use. We are currently using Camtasia and Amara to develop the captions but it is slow, tedious work typing out the script.
I’d like to find a way to take the audio track of a video file and convert it to editable text (in essence the opposite of text to speech). I know that the conversion won’t be perfect, but I feel that the effort to correct words would be easier than transcribing the videos.
Does anyone know of a solution that would take an audio file or the soundtrack to a video and convert it to editable text? I’d like a cross-platform solution (i.e. both Windows and Mac OS X).
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions you can provide.

Dragon appears to be iOS only. David wanted something cross-platform for the desktop/laptop. I can’t find anything else.

I have been sitting here for days, transcribing dialogue from interviews, does this work for on camera talent?
How long does it take to “train” the program for someones voice? Can the talent read a few paragraphs and then can I adjust the program in post?

Dragon is licensed to one voice only which means each instructor would have to purchase a license in order to use the conversion technology.
I am on a hunt for the same sort of features (professors who do interviews with authors they then want in transcript format) and I’ve come to the conclusion that if there is a software solution out there, it is the product a highly secretive [;-)] software vendor who is carefully hiding it from potential users.
I’m off to search among conference professionals to see if they have discovered any solutions.

Have you tried the audio to text conversion called ScribeOn, sir? I’ve used it several times and I testify that the outcome is very accurate. The transcriber who did my work was a 100% English-speaking native from the USA. Their service rate is very affordable which did not hurt my pocket.
