xlr to usb for recording audio
I currently record audio from a boom to my camcorder, however, I’m thinking about using something like

to record audio from a boom to this device and connecting that to my laptop. this is so i can have a higher quality audio signal to work with (24 bits)
is this a feasible solution? also does anyone have any idea on how i would sync up the timecode from the tape to the audio?

Hate to pop your bubble, but the specs of the cable device you indicate are limited to 16-bit.

even with the 16bit, is there an easy way to sync the timecode of the audio with the video?

Hello Matthew,
Easy is a relative term. Anytime you double record things get less easy.
With the right technology, syncing in post can be done automatically. It can certainly be done manually if you use a camera mic for a guide track.
If your camera outputs timecode, you can use BoomRecorder software and a hardware interface with a firewire output to a computer. You plug the timecode into one of the audio inputs and BoomRecorder automatically recognizes it as time code. It records and displays it. That should help your post process.
BoomRecorder supports 24-bit, even 32-bit audio.

I’m using timecode with BR through an Onyx Firewire board.
BR jams and locks in tc just fine and seems quite stable.
I am getting my TC from a Deneke slate, however the camera dept said that was backward and usually the sound dept sets the code that jams to the slate. Is that the usual practice? I have never worried about TC before as the mix ended up in the camera.
If so what is a good TC generator that is compact and portable?
Who sets the TC starting point? We start each day with roughly the same code due to powering up the slate…?
Have I reached my question limit yet?!

What’s BR?
I suspect you’ll find that on video shoots with cameras that generate timecode, they are the source. For film camera with no TC another source, probably the audio recorder.
