  • -Urgent: Job Deadline- video playback doesn’t work and failed video proxy

Posted by Alberto Poli on January 2, 2019 at 3:05 pm

    Hello everyone,
i’ve been using Vegas 16 till a few hours ago, when all of a sudden I could not see any video clip running in the video preview anymore.
The audio goes on but no video is shown, and even on the timeline the clip is blank.
Also, when i try to create a video proxy i get an error message (see screenshot attached).
I’ve tried unistalling, rebooting, cleaning temporary files and registry, reinstalling still nothing changed, no matter the video type/format I use.
Video driver are up to date.
Anyone has a clue of what is happening?
    thank you very much!

    quick update:
I can only see the clips being played on preview (and their thumbnail on the timeline) when I’m working on a previous project in which I had already created video proxies before this problem showed up.
    Other than that, complete blackout.

What the hell is this?! :/

Alberto, I’m as much in the dark as you. Can you supply any further information?

    Hi Alberto,

I would start by doing a full reset of Vegas, while holding down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys, left double click on the desktop icon to start Vegas, in the pop-up window check the box ‘Delete all cached application data’, then left click on ‘Yes’. Go to ‘Options’, ‘Preferences’, ‘Video’ tab, and change ‘GPU acceleration of video processing:’ to ‘Off’, then ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’. Then I would close Vegas, and power down my computer. Start up my computer and restart Vegas as normal, I would run no other program or services, just Vegas.

I would create a new project. Add a media file that you know worked in the past and create a proxy. If that worked I would add a media file from the previous problem project and create a proxy. If that worked I would close this new test project and load up the previous problem project. If it had the same errors, I would go back to the test project and continue loading media files from the problem project one at a time, creating proxies until I found the media file that may be causing the problem.

If none of that worked, I would role back the display adapter driver to a previous version. and then try the test process again.

Along the way I may think of something else to try in an attempt to isolate the issue, and along the way I would keep good notes of what and when I tried things.

Also, are you on the latest build of Vegas Pro? Are you a long time user of Vegas Pro or is this your first project? Can you post screenshots of the source media (using Mediainfo in text mode), as well as, project settings and render settings you may have used in the problem project. The more information you provide, the more likely someone will provide a path to the solution.

    Best Regards……George

Thank You Graham for the kind words. As you initially posted, perhaps Alberto will return with additional information.

Alberto, if you can post additional information as I and Graham have requested here, and I see you have also posted your issue in the Magix Vegas Creative Forum, so also post additional information there as well. The more information in front of more eyes, hopefully a solution will be forthcoming.

    Best Regards……George

Have you upgraded to version 352? This may sound like a similar problem people are having in the magix forum. I went back to 307 because of the new “feature” that blacklists certain plugins. If nothing else works maybe try going back to 307. Also maybe check this thread.

thank you guys for your messages! Here are more infos:
    Vegas pro 16 Build 248
    Win 10.0 64 bit
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz
NVIDIA GEForce gtx 1050 driver 25.21.14.1735
GPU acceleration on Vegas either OFF (won’t work on ON either though).

As mentioned in my first post, no matter what footage i’m using, or what kind of project i’m working on. It’s always happening for 3 days now and never happened in 10 years of using Vegas.

The only clips that I can preview are those from the projects in which I had already created the video proxys (still event thumbnails on the timeline are blank though).
So the only step that I’m missing now, within those that George kindly suggested, is role back the display adapter driver to a previous version.

    Latest update:
I found out that the only clips I can see and create proxy for are videos from my Gopro Hero 4 (AVC 1920X1080 59.940fps progressive).
All other videos (from my Nikon D3200, Sony A7s, Gopro Hero7, all kinds of .mp4 clips from internet or mobile phones) won’t work at all.
It also looks like Vegas is running a lot slower than before.

    Alberto,

If rolling back the display driver makes no improvement, I’m kind of shooting in the dark here…..

I would follow Dimitrios’s suggestion and update to build 307. If that makes no improvement I would update to the latest build 352.

You may also want to disable the so4compoundplug. Follow the instructions provided in this thread https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/avc-xavc-s-issues-in-vp15-try-disabling-so4compoundplug-dll–108345/

Although this is for Vegas 15, it may shed some light on your issue and you can simply enable it if disabling doesn’t make an improvement.

Am I correct that you have done a complete and clean uninstall of Vegas pro 16, before re-installations, is that correct? https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/faq-how-can-i-do-a-clean-uninstall-of-vegas-pro–111205/

Have you followed any of the suggestions from the Vegas Creative Software Forum?

    Best Regards……George

As always thank you so much George for your efforts.
Yes I’ve done multiple clean uninstalling of Vegas but no luck with that.
So I’m going to try to update the display driver (you mean the graphic card right?) and disabling the so4, and see if anything happens.
Last try will be updating to a more recent build, if you guys can think on anything more don’t hesitate to share it!

Any idea on why the only footage that’s working comes from the hero4 and nowhere else?
