In certain sections of my video, a sound effect will play. I have an audio clip dubbing over each instance of this sound effect. Every instance of the event being placed is meticulously placed frame by frame so that it sounds perfect.

Now, I’ve been doing stuff like this for a long time now with no issues. However, now something strange is happening. In the preview, it will sound fine. But when rendered, some instances sound out of sync (even though their timeline placement is 100% accurate). I’ll then go back to the preview, and they’re out of sync in the preview. Now, here’s the weird part. If I close and reopen the window, or minimize, or do all sorts of random things, then go back and play the audio clip, it’ll be back to normal. This doesn’t happen for any of my other audio clips.

Randomly, it will render in sync. But most of the time, at least 3 different instances will be out of sync even though they are locked in place on the timeline. I have tried unchecking “Quantize to Frames”, disabling snapping, re-rendering the audio with different file formats, but nothing works.

To solve a problem like this you have to narrow it down. This means going back to what works to start. You mentioned you’ve done this type editing a lot. Go back to a project that is similar that is working.

Once you have a project that “works” .. do a save as to create a sample project. So we now have a project that works that we can alter. Add a small bit of the media from the project that has the problem. Do things still work? Add more of the media .. any problems. Can you do something to the old project that creates the problem? If you can, then hopefully you have an idea of the cause.

You get the idea … narrow things down to what you KNOW works and what you KNOW doesn’t. The cause may become apparent.

I’ve experienced craziness like this where the software just doesn’t seem to like a particular sound file (perhaps it is a different breed of a recognized codec or something). What I’ve done in the past to get around it, is to render out the sounds that are having problems from vegas and bring the renders back in to replace the problem files. If you have the problem sound effects on an isolated track, you could even just solo that track, get out one good render to a long .wav file or something, and then bring that file back in and drop it on the timeline, deleting the problem files events from the timeline. …or however you prefer to do it.

I agree Tim … most of my “weird” problems in Vegas behavior have been due to media Vegas did not like.
