Rendering 1920 x 1080 to DVD
Hello,
Let me apologize right off the bat for this post. I realize there are numerous forum discussions on Creative Cow about this question, but I can’t find one that answers my precise concerns. My Vegas project contains sound, still photographs, text and graphics, and 60i 1920×1080 footage from a Canon hfg10 converted to AVI through Neoscene. I have been editing the project using Vegas’ HD 1080-60i template in Project Properties.
Previous renders that remain in 1920×1080 resolution such as the Sony AVC template look great. Unfortunately, I must now burn it onto a dvd to play on dvd players.
My question is: how to get the most out of DVD’s 720×480 pixels? I know that starting with HD resolution then down scaling is better than never having been HD at all, but it really is such a bummer!
1. If I plan to render in widescreen 720×480, should I change my project properties after editing but before the render to match the render settings? What happens if I retain the current project properties, but render using the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream template?
I have experience rendering with the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream MPEG-2 template, but never from HD to SD. I just realized that if I change the project settings to NTSC DV Widescreen, two small margins appear on each side of the 1920×1080 images in the preview screen. Darn that 1.2121 pixel aspect ratio. Is there a fix here?
2. Is there any advantage to not changing my project properties, rendering to another file type or template, and letting DVDA rather than Vegas do the compressing? I may be misreading, but this thread (https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/899003#899185)appears to recommend this strategy.
3. Are there any strategies I can employ in the editing phase to improve quality (i.e. converting to broadcast colors, turning on the reduce interlace flicker feature for stills or video, etc.)
Thank you for your assistance.
James
