Movie file format and size
I am very new to Sony Vegas. I recently captured about an hours worth of DVC film which was saved on my hard drive as multiple .avi files, some very large. I dragged one of the clips to the editing area, split it, and added some text. Using the movie wizard, I created a Quick Time .mov file. This file was over 7 Gigs for only about a minute

First of all, I don’t think Vegas does a great job with MOV and always use WMV. However, it sounds like you rendered to an uncompressed MOV file. MOV is just a wrapper – you also have to pick the amount of compression and the codec used. 7Gig for 1 minute sounds a little extreme, though – uncompressed should be closer to 1 Gig/minute.

I did not see any choices for compression when I was using the make a movie wizard. Can you give me a clue where I should look for these settings?

Ahh… Vegas Movie Studio.
I don’t know what options are available in Studio. Do you have a “custom” button with MOV you can use? What presets are available?

I found quality settings under File > Properties and set the Video to “Preview”. Is this how the compression you referred to is handled? You also said you are not familiar with Sony Vegas. Isn’t this a Sony Vegas forum?

Edward said he was not familiar with Studio which is the watered down version of Vegas and is what you apparently have. He is VERY familiar with the full fledged Vegas program!

You’re in the right place and most answers related to the full version will also apply to the Studio version. However, this is one area in which they differ – no “custom” options for MPEG2 in Studio. I also don’t know what preset are available in the Studio version for MPEG2.
