Time line output to NTSC monitor
I am trying to output a file I have in my timeline in Vegas 5 to an NTSC Monitor so I can advance my timeline frame by frame and see it in my NTSC monitor. For the life of me I can’t figure out how to do this.
can anyone give me step by step instructions?

computer –> Firewire cable –> camera/convertor/deck –> S-Vid or RCA –> TV
Click on the “External Preview” button.

Yes, but this only will play the video file in print video to Dv mode. An option under tools. You can not pause the video and advance it frame to frame. It just plays (prints to dv) or you can cancel it. On or off.
I am trying to advance my timeline “frame by frame” and see it in my NTSC monitor. I am thinking there is a selection or tool somewhere in the software but I can’t find it.
Can you assest me further in a way I can advance the file in the time threw the NTSC monitor frame by frame (like control it with the left and right arrows keys advancing frame by fram)?

If you click on the External Preview button, it will show wherever the cursor is located on the external monitor. Just use the left right arrows (Hold ALT down for frame by frame) to move frame by frame on the external monitor. I am NOT talking about Print to Tape – I’m talking about External Preview.

If you don’t want to use a camera in the “camera/convertor/deck” link of this chain, what is the most ecconmical way to go? Are there other things out that are cheaper than something like a “Canopus ADVC110”?

There are other units similar to the Canopus. Pyro has the AV Link and can be found for $150. It has worked well for many people. Don’t go “cheap” on this, though. Spend the $150! (DO NOT go Dazzle!)

I must concur with Edward on this, DONT be cheap on this one.
I have setup systems for people and the Canopus ADVC 110 (or better) has always given consistent results (and fairly good quality as well). Besides, the ADVC can then also be used for non-dv capture of footage (from a VHS machine for example) for conversion to dvd for customers

I’ve used several converter boxes and the less expensive ones have not been satisfactory. I’m presently having problems with the ADS box. It worked for a while after I bought it, but soon became erratic.
Another low-cost convertor box works better, but is still not as stable as I want it to be.
I have just bought the Canopus box. I have not tried it yet, but if it works, it will be money well spent. I’ve watched hours turn into days as I tried to do a simple transfer to or from tape with the other boxes.
We’ll see.
