Pixellated/blocky previews and rendering.
Hi all,
I’ve just tried to create a video in Sony Vegas and for some reason it looks like this –
It’s pixellated to heck and I just can’t figure out why. This applies to both the preview and the rendering too.

Last time I rendered a video there were no problems so I don’t know why this has happened. All the videos I am taking clips from are HD quality and don’t suffer from the problems you can see here. They are all simple avi files.
I’ve just made a whole video and didn’t realise that this was an issue until I completed and rendered it. I thought the pixellation in the preview would only be limited to the preview (as that’s normally a bit rough looking anyway). Now the whole thing I’ve spent two days making looks terrible >.< I’ve spent a while googling and trying things but nothing has worked.
I’m using Vegas Pro 10.0. I’d appreciate any help or advice!

You would need to post media info on your camera source, any intermediate formats, Project settings, and render as selection. There is not enough info on what you are doing to help.

What codec do the AVI files use? I’m guessing it’s DivX, or Xvid, or some other x.264 codec. If so, this is your problem. Vegas Pro probably can’t process the codec properly. You’ll need to convert it to a format that Vegas Pro can edit like M-JPEG or proper AVC/H.264 MP4 (not in a avi file).

I’m not very savvy with this program so I’m afraid I don’t know how to find out what the intermediate format is >.<
I did recently change a lot of settings in order to get rid of the horizontal line error when rendering videos, so I might’ve messed something up along the way. I’m considering just uninstalling and reinstalling it to see if that’ll help.

Download a free utility called MediaInfo and open the file with it and post the output here. This will tell you the codec and lots of other information.

That doesn’t help because it’s some MP4 file and NOT the AVI file that you originally asked about. You are showing an AVI file in your original screen shot.
Also, in MediaInfo, you must use View | Text so see the details. You can post them here.

Oops, wrong video. This one is definitely one of the ones that I’m trying to use in Vegas but keeps emerging all pixelly. I pressed view/text this time.

OK, so as suspected, you have AVC/H.264 video in an AVI container. Vegas Pro doesn’t like that. AVC/H.264 belongs in an MP4 container. I would suggest that you either use the MP4 format instead of AVI or you convert the AVI file to M-JPEG or Lagarith, or some other format that Vegas Pro is expecting to find in a AVI file.
BTW, you can use AviDemux 2.5 to convert the video to MJPEG with PCM audio if you’d like:

Thanks! Damned Vegas is hella complicated. You’re right, I just tried playing with an mp4 video in vegas and it looked fine with no pixellation.
I can convert the avis I have to mp4s no problem. I’m guessing there’s no quick way to fix the overall video I created in vegas though, I’ll just have to start it all over again using mp4s instead of avis?
