Hardware advice – SVP 11
Just finishing another big project, using quite a lot of colour correction with Magic Bullet. I am really starting to notice some slowdown on my system, especially with render times. Still useable, but close to not being so!
Now, I am not a pro by any shot, and don’t have a big budget, but feel I need to add a proper GPU to my system.
I currently have a i5 3570k with 8gb RAM and am just using the onboard graphics.
I have read the GTX 570 might be a good card to go for? I can get a second hand one of these pretty cheap.
Will this do the job and be fairly future proof and improve things?
At the moment, I output from the motherboard to two monitors. One through HDMI and one through VGA. Again, not ideal, but does the job for me. Will the new card be ok with this set up?

In a nutshell, You are not gonna get any significant improvement doing that.

Even with a modern graphics card, the CPU is still doing most of the work. You will gain a little by upgrading to an Ivy Bridge i7 (and 16gb RAM) but stepping up to the newest Xeon CPUs will yield the best results.

As others have pointed out, while the Core i5 3570k is a quad core, it doesn’t support hyper threading so it only has 4 cores and 4 threads. The Core i7’s have 4 cores and 8 threads unless you get a 6 core like mine which has 12 threads. So the Core i5’s are OK for light video work but for heaving FX processing you really need to step up to a Core i7 and I would get nothing less than a Hex Core (6-cores) if you are doing heavy color grading.
I’m not so sure that a GPU wouldn’t help you out though. I say this because Magic Bullet supports GPU acceleration so a compatible GPU may actually give you some benefit. While GPU acceleration with Vegas Pro has been hit and miss, if you are looking to speed up Magic Bullet, you might want to contact them and see what they say.

I just upgraded to SVP 12 and have been having a play with newbluefx. A lot of the newbluefx effects seems to grind vegas to a halt. It seems to add the effect and if you render they look ok, but it’s impossible to preview them, in particular the openfx ones.
Are we saying that a gpu such as a gtx 570 wouldn’t help with this? And that if I want to play with the more intense effects I will be needing a CPU upgrade?

I have a 3770 i7, 32gb of RAM and a R9 290 in my editing/gaming rig and newbluefx stuff grinds me to a halt without prerending to ram (where 32gb of ram comes in handy)
I am upgrading to a second hand 3930k (6 core, 12 thread) CPU+Motherboard for $500… selling me 3770+motherboard for around $250 and that is a nice upgrade for editing for $250 🙂
in short…. with Vegas and most video editors… CPU horsepower is needed

I’m saying that it actually might help it. I would contact NewBlueFX. Plug-ins that support GPU acceleration will benefit from having a good GPU.

The question is what is NewBluFX using to add GPU acceleration? If they only support NVIDIA’s CUDA, then your AMD R9 290 is not helping because it only supports OpenCL.
