    Hello,

I am unable to open an avi file of a movie in Vegas Pro 12 for editing.

It’s a compressed avi file, mpeg1 video codec, 352×240 frame size, 1152 video frame bit rate, 29.97 frame rate, mp2 audio codec, 128 audio bit rate, 44.1KHz sampling rate.

How do I determine the codecs I need to add to Vegas Pro to open avi files of these properties, and where can I download them?

    1. DO NOT install a Codec Pack made for gaming, like K-Lite. It will replace otherwise overwrite the good encoders installed by Vegas.
    2. Use MediaInfo to see what is in the AVI container.
    3. DO NOT install a Codec Pack.

This avi file will open in VP8 on an older Win XP 32 bit system.

Is the problem due to the fact that I have VP12 64 bit on Win 7?

    I read this thread….
    https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/Forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=859053
and Im wondering if installing the codec suggested in the thread will solve the probem…

    Thanks.

    Vic,
I recently had the same problem. When I converted
the AVI file to an MP4 file Vegas accepted it. When
I initially tried to put the AVI file on the timeline
Vegas rejected it. The converter I used was the
Pazera Free Video to iPod Converter. If that works
let us know. And oh I’m using Vegas Pro 12 like you.

Peter, I converted the avi file to another avi file using the default NTSC DV codec on the Any Video Converter app.

It’s a workaround but at least the new avi file now opens up in Vegas 12.
