Vegas 12 issues / Questions
HI;
I do video editing for my personal projects and for a small business that I work on with a good friend. I’m experiencing some glitches with Vegas 12 and am hoping someone may have some suggestions.
I’ve been using Vegas Movie Studio 11 for some time now and it has done everything I’ve needed it to do. Only thing I’ve been uphappy about is that my live / realtime previews were often not smooth and lagged unless in low quality. (I blamed this on my older i7 2.8 with 16GB of ram).
So I had a new box built in a 2011 socket board and a 3820 i7 with 32Gb ram and a Cherryville SSD. I had them put in a GTX 650 because I just couldn’t figure out if a higher end card than that would help with video editing. I installed Vegas studio 12 on the new system, since 12 was suppose to make better use of more memory and GPU acceleration. (I’ve not tried installing 11 on this new system)
(Note: Much of the video I work with needs to have precise cuts / alignment and I really need to be able to see good quality previews to know where to make my edits.)
Depending on the files I work with most of my live previews are reasonably smooth in best / auto. A lot seems to depend on what camera it is from. The 125Mb a minute files from my Phone and the 100Mb /min from my HD camcorder seem to be a lot more difficult for it to live preview smoothly than the 300Mb+ /min files from my 7d.
I do wish the real time preview was a bit smoother and can’t really figure out what limit I’m hitting when the live preview isn’t smooth (I’ll check and the CPU, GPU, disk are not maxed out, but I will have glitches in my preview).
I’ve read a lot of posts and am wondering if this is just general glitches with version 12 that a lot of people have seen. I’ve even read some people say that the Adobes editor previews much more smoothly than that of Vegas 12. (I’m not really wanting to switch at this point, but if I had to, I could).
I can live with the less than perfect live preview if I have to, but it’s kind of frustrating since it (having smooth previews) was the main reason that I bought this new $2000+ editing / computer setup.
Is that much anything I could tweak / upgrade that would make my previews smoother? (e.g. a different graphic card)
My second concern is that with Vegas 12 I’ve had a number of times now when I go to do something like start to render or add fx that Vegas quits and I get an “Vegas has unexpectedly terminated, please send a report….” and it gives me no more details about what happened. When I restart the program it normally recovers my project and I can continue. I would say this has happened at least 8 times in the last 2 weeks. In the previous couple years that I used Vegas 10/11 on my old system I can really only even remember it crashing a couple times total. Any thoughts on what might be going on here?
I’m just on a trial on 12 and I know it isn’t expensive, but if I would be better off going back to 11 or going to a different editor, I’d rather not waste the money on 12.
Thanks very much;
Jamie Dolan
