Sony Vegas 12 Machine Recommondation
This is my first post here, and appreciate your time.
I did look at some previous posts on machine specs for PC, but was hoping to get a more up to date recommendation.
My boss is using Vegas 12 and having rendering issues (White screens and lockups). I know that I need to get him a good GPU card for this machine but before I do that I was considering a full editing machine. He is using a HP Machine that is stock from HP. I think it is an i6 processor but need to check.
So… If you could buy anything say up to 3k, what would you get?

Thank you very much Dave, this is just what I needed.
One follow up: My boss is carrying around his projects on an external drive so he does not need to copy to the local machine(s). (He works at home and here on Vegas.)
Is there enough throughput to and from these drives for HD quality projects?

It depends on what interface the hard drives are using (eSata, Firewire, USB 3.0, etc.). Most external drives are USB 2.0, so I would copy the project info (and video clips) to the RAID. If the external drive was eSATA, it’s probably best to still copy them to the RAID since performance will be better. I do own a Lacie external drive (eSATA, Firewire and USB) and have used it for video editing with Vegas Pro 8, but you’ll get better performance just using the SATA3 RAID drives.
I probably should have also added: you should have another SATA3 7200rpm hard drive, to keep other computer programs on, and the Vegas Pro project files. The RAID data should strictly be for video. I personally have a 1tb Seagate Barricuda 7200rpm SATA3 drive. They are cheap (under $90) and fast!

I believe he is using USB3.0
Further investigations is showing problems when he is using New Blue FX Titler Pro 2 specifically.

I just build this Hex Core system a few months ago and it is very stable with Vegas Pro 12.0:

The only major difference between the hardware I listed and your new system specs is the Intel i7 processor, yours being Sandy Bridge and the one I listed being Ivy Bridge and the motherboard chipset, with the Z77 chipset, which is designed to fully take advantage of the Ivy Bridge architecture.
If you do build a system, make sure you know about BIOS configuration, since you have to make a change to the Memory Profile in the BIOS to take advantage of the newer high-speed memory modules. By default it will usually run at 1333 speed (even if the memory & motherboard are advertised to run at 1600). You’ll want to choose XMP Profile 1, in the BIOS Memory Profile and this will make the memory modules I listed run at 1866.

I built my system for my 10 year old son, as his Christmas present this past December. I run Vegas Pro 12 on it, but i’m not a pro editor, only doing it for personal projects (ie- non-paid work), and my computer flies. My render times are the same ratio as my timeline length, with my 1080 footage rendered for internet use (YouTube 1080), and I only spent $1000, and that includes a 23″ IPS monitor.
If the current 3rd gen i7 processors significantly decrease render times, it’s hard to justify spending twice the amount (except for you pros, where saving any time is a big priority).
