Cineform codec missing
Posted by Nick White on February 19, 2013 at 8:58 amI have tried to render using Cineform to avi. Error message says “No compatible codec available”. I have read several threads from various forums, to get more and more confused, by versions and possible solutions. I even downloaded the GoPro software as someone suggested.
I searched my drive and found two pre-go pro versions, one in windows system32 and the other in SysWOW64. There were also others in the GoPro folders. However they are not the cause of the trouble as they were installed to try to fix the lost codec.
I can select the Cineform codec and even configure it. But then it errors.
Help?thanks in advance

HAH! And that makes it different from everything else video?! Video work is one _great big issue_ in the workflow. 😀
Thanks for the heads-up. Can you elaborate or provide leads? All I have heard is that it is a lossless cod(ec) that seemed to be available to Vegas.

There was a time when Vegas Pro shipped with the CineForm codec. At some point this stopped so currently CineForm is NOT available in Vegas Pro out-of-the-box. I own CineForm NeoScene and I have absolutely no issues with Vegas Pro 12.0 and CineForm. I did have to upgrade to the latest version of Neo Scene because Sony is now using a more efficient way of calling CineForm and it requires the latest version.
I have heard that you can download the free GoPro Studio and that will give you a working CineForm codec for free. I can’t test this because I already have a paid version.
The point is, CineForm works flawlessly in Vegas Pro 12.0 if you have the latest version of both.

February 19, 2013 at 1:17 pmThanks John. You were the guy that pointed me to Cineform as a lossless encoder IIRC.
I did install GoPro’s offering, but it made no difference. Still get the same error message. I have tried moving the dll around, but still….
So basically ATM Vegas does not contain the CF codec, but still has the option?
Where should the codec (from whatever source) reside to get Vegas to see it? As I say I have tried various ideas, but still nothing. eg,,,,where does your successful codec reside?
I need to post a couple of follow ups to other posts about your replies…I was a bit defensive….you’re a steady guy….thank you 🙂

February 19, 2013 at 4:08 pmCineform was such an awesome application/Codec back in
the day , But increases in Computer Processing and surrounding Technology caught up with it.
When i heard GoPro bought them, i knew what that meant.Steve Rhoden

February 19, 2013 at 11:41 pmAh thanks Steve. Interesting. I might have a bit of a look around about its history.
And I agree, when some specialised product is bought up by a large company, basically to absorb it, it’s usually its shark in the pool moment.

No, Vegas Pro has no option for CineForm. If you have that option, it’s because you created a template in some previous version of Vegas Pro. I would create a new CineForm template if you are using an old one. I have found render templates from previous versions of Vegas Pro causing problems with CineForm. To make a new one you can follow my tutorial: Create a CineForm Render Template in Sony Vegas Pro

Actually I don’t know and I work on a MacBook Pro all day so I can’t look right now. I will have to look when I get home tonight and have access to my Windows workstation.

Thanks for the kind words. I understand that by the time people come here to post, they are probably very frustrated to begin with so I try and keep an open mind and heart. 😉

February 20, 2013 at 8:44 pmsame problem as you – download the trial version of the full fat software (not the free version) and you can render (at least this worked for me in vegas 12) – it appears the free version only gives you decoding – not encoding, after the trial finishes then it disables the dll’s and you can’t render again.
