Not responding
Posted by Jim Murphy on December 31, 2012 at 7:38 pmHAPPY NEW YEAR ALL.
I’m working on a project in VP 12. Recently if I try to do even simple tasks like splitting an event it goes into “not responding.” It’s happening all the time. Can’t do anything. Any ideas out there? Thanks, Jim

January 1, 2013 at 1:01 amThere’s probably a few hundred things that could be happening, but the first place to look is in the Windows Resource Monitor (resmon). In the “Overview” tab, look for Vegas. Right click on Vegas then select “Analyze Wait Chain”. This will hopefully tell you what process is hanging Vegas up.

January 1, 2013 at 1:39 pmStephen, thanks for your prompt reply. My OS is Vista. I don’t think that is an option for me, but I will check into it. Jim

Oh, the humanity!
64-bit?
Do you otherwise meet the minimum hardware requirements for Vegas 12?
How much RAM do you have? Yes, the minimum says you can run Vegas 12 with 4Gb of RAM. But that’s about it – as soon as you want to actually do something, then you run out of RAM real fast and go into page swapping, which can sometimes present itself as a “not responding” error – particularly if your swap disk is the same drive where your video editing files are located. Here’s the minimum hardware requirements from Sony:
Vegas Pro 12 system requirements
Microsoft® Windows Vista® 64-bit SP2, Windows 7 64-bit, or Windows® 8 64-bit operating system
2 GHz processor (multicore or multiprocessor CPU recommended for HD or stereoscopic 3D)
1.2 GB hard-disk space for program installation
750 MB hard-disk space for content installation
4 GB RAM (8 GB recommended)
OHCI-compatible IEEE-1394DV card (for DV and HDV capture and print-to-tape)
USB 2.0 connection (for importing from AVCHD, XDCAM EX, NXCAM, or DVD camcorders)
512 MB GPU memory
Windows-compatible sound card
DVD-ROM drive (for installation from a DVD only)
Supported CD-recordable drive (for CD burning only)
Supported DVD-R/-RW/+R/+RW (for DVD burning only)
Supported BD-R/-RE drive (for Blu-ray Disc™ burning only)
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.51 (included on application disc)
Apple® QuickTime® 7.1.6 or later for reading and writing QuickTime files
Internet Connection (for Gracenote MusicID Service)
GPU-accelerated video processing and rendering require an OpenCL™-supported NVIDIA®, AMD/ATI™, or Intel® GPU with 512MB memory or more. Detailed specifications and driver requirements can be found at: https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegaspro/gpuaccelerationSteve Mann

January 15, 2013 at 8:30 pmStephen,
I bought a new wiz bang computer. Unfortunately, I am still having the same problem. When I analyzed the chain I got this message:
vegas120.exe (PID:1208) Thread: 6784
I have no idea what that means. When I check the message, it gave me the option of ending the process, which closed down Pro 12.
I think I got the project messed up by erroneously thinking I could use the color match filter before I did multicam. I’m thinking I am just going to have to start over, unless you have a better idea. Thanks, Jim

January 16, 2013 at 8:02 pmStephen,
I started over. I took out all of the filters (levels, color match, etc) that I had put in the original clips before I used the Excalibur multicam function on the three cams I was using for this wedding ceremony. Everything looked good after the multicam process. However, even with no filters in the new project I got the “not responding” in Pro 12.
So, now I have a fine computer, Win 8, etc. but I am still having big problems. Now I am wondering if Excalibur is the culprit. Any thoughts? Jim

January 16, 2013 at 8:58 pmThe PID (Process ID) and Thread don’t really tell the average user anything. They don’t even mean much to a Windows programmer. The Analyze Wait Chain only shows the parent program – it could mean that the program is waiting for something other than a process.
Remember that Pro 12 is 64-bit only, so if you have any plug-ins that are 32-bit, you might experience problems.
I would make sure that Vegas 12 is working OK without any plug-ins. Uninstall everything and reinstall Vegas alone. Make a test project and add a plug-in then test again.
Other things to try:
Make sure that your GPU options are turned off.
Disable the virus protection.BTW – Typically you apply all F/X after you run multicam.

January 17, 2013 at 12:22 amSounds reasonable. Excalibur is supposed to be ok with 64 bit, but will uninstall it, and test things out. Thanks for your help. Will report back. Jim
