  • Vegas Pro 10 – Composite Envelope Not affecting layer?

Posted by Colin Mcquillen on October 5, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Hey guys, I’m looking for some help with Composite Envelopes.

    What I’m trying to do:
I have an Adjustments Track containing simple Levels & S-Curve FX adjustment, which I am Applying successfully (source alpha mode?) to the Main Track – this all works perfectly.

However, I would like to control how much & when this is applied, using a Composite Envelope and adding points (See image below). I know I can use keyframes and tweak, but this has proved too time consuming.

My problem is, that the Composite Envelope is NOT having any affect on the track below. Which is odd, because when I try a Mute Envelope, it DOES mute the FX correctly.

Am I missing something – is there a better(correct) way of doing this?

It’s like a steering wheel in my pants, driving me’ nuts!

I see you there with an adjustment layer, seems you are
familiar with after effects…Vegas doesnt work anywhere
similar like After effects regarding compositing.

Thanks Steve, but it still doesn’t make sense that I can ‘Mute’ the effect of the FX, but can’t ‘Fade’ the effect?

The only progress I’ve made is to enable the Composite Envelope to impact on the Composite Mode, e.g. if I use “Overlay mode”, it darkens the Main Clip (to be expected) then sliding the CompEnv to 0% the darkening effect is reduced.

Are you saying I can’t use this technique to impact/adjust Track FX?

It feels like there should be a combination of Comp Modes & Layer structures that would work?

[Colin McQuillen] “It feels like there should be a combination of Comp Modes & Layer structures that would work?” Yes, I can’t agree with you more.

Very regularly this topic is raised:”I can do so much in Vegas, but I can’t do this?!” – well, something along those lines. I put it down to that Vegas is so very very easy to use to get a creative idea out, that this, ostensibly “easy” or straightforward process in “other” graphics packages can do this, then why not here too? It also doesn’t help that the lexicon or vernacular of the graphic’s language is superimposed here on Vegas. For you to actually name and expect to do adjustments with an adjustment layer is testament to your frustration in wanting this to happen. Me too!

Here is a link to Gary Rebholz, who is the training manager for Sony Creative Software.

He explains just what IS available through Compositing in Vegas. My guess is that you know all of this already. However, if you can pick-out any reference to be able to adjust an FX or FX chain I’ll want to know.

Adjustment Layers, and all that implies coming over from a graphics package? Yes please.

Would be good if the Video Bus had a By-Pass for FX-ing?

    Cheers

    Grazie

No one (1) software can get everything done.
