can i import mp4 into DVD Architect?
I need to create a DVD. I have mp4 files rendered with the Main Concept template. I know normally I should be rendering to mpg2 and ac3 to create a dvd. Is it still possible to do this given that it’s not meant as a copy to be given to a client?
I attempted it but the result was that the video’s sound was replaced by static noise.
Can someone shed some light please?

Gilles, it sounds like you’re trying to get out of doing more work again 🙂
Unless you do this as a data file on a DVD (i.e. meant only for computer playback), you still have to do an MPEG-2/AC-3 render.
Your other option is to do it straight from the Vegas timeline.

I use this option for one-off student project DVDs all the time and, as long as the video is 1 hr. or less (this method uses PCM audio), it works great. -

Just tried… stumbling block aheaed…I was hoping to have the availability to do only the selection as the timeline’s video is 4 hours!
I guess this method won’t work. Any other ideas?
You see, I’ve already remdered this long timeline in shorter mp4 segments. I was hoping to just import them in DVDA. and burn a couple of DVDs.

Copy/paste the relevant selection to a new instance of Vegas and do it from that one.
Keep in mind that any track level video FXs (i.e. Track Motion) will NOT get copied over 🙁 -

What’s the longest video I can burn using this method?
I just tried 1/2 the project, about 2:15 hours, and it stated it would require 10GB…Gilles

Gilles, my experience has been that the limit is only 1 hr. because this method creates a PCM audio file, not an AC-3 file which impacts the bitrate.

Thanks Mike. I may have to split the project and render to mpg2/ac3 after all.How do you go about knowing if the mpg/ac3 will fit on a DVD? for 2.25 hours, which bit rate should I select?

I’ve been using the bitrate calculator found at https://www.johncline.com/bitcalc110.zip for a very long time and it’s never let me down.
I make a few changes to the default settings and they are as follows.
Click the Settings button (lower left corner), set 1 kilobit=1000 bits, set Audio encoding type and Bitrate to 192 Kb/s – Dolby 1.0 (the AC-3 default in Vegas) and the Safety Margin to 5% (default is 1% and I like to have more margin than that).Using this calculator (and my changes), I get the following VBR numbers for 2.25 hr.
7,264,000 / 4,152,000 / 2,488,000
Audio is AC-3 at the Vegas default of 192 192 Kb/s.
Due to the length of the program, I’d do a 2-pass render.
It will take longer but the results will be worth it. -
