I’ve been using two Sony VX2000’s for about 6 years and I’m ready to get into an HD camera. I shoot a lot of sports (lots of football at night) so I was initially interested in the Sony HXR NX70U because of it’s water proof and dust proof features, but all I seem to read about that camera is that it’s a real dog. Zoom problems, no ND filter, color issues, etc. I’m currently running Vegas 10 (computer specs below) and would like something that is fairly compatible with the Vegas software (no plant to upgrade to 11 soon). I don’t mind the size and weight of the VX 2000 so something similar in size would be fine. Because of the camera being used frequently in the outdoor elements, something with a reputation for being durable would be helpful. Also because I film a lot at night a camera that handles low light well is also desirable. I’m looking to spend $3000.00 at the very most (less would be great). Also I would like to not record on tape anymore so something with a hard drive is what I would prefer. Any thoughts would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks
    Dave P.

I’ve never gone wrong with a Canon while editing on Vegas (well, Sony has gone wrong plenty of times). I shoot on Canon Vixia HF S21s that have 64 GB hard drives and two SD card slots, which means I can record for over 10 hours on the hard drive alone at the lower bit rates (or about 4-7 hours at the higher ones) and record continuously on SD cards, which I’ve never needed to do. They’re great for the long events I shoot, and there are batteries that last four hours on them that are about $100 each.

You’re stuck with the lens on it, though, so if you need to telephoto in you’d need something else. See what Canon offers.

I prefer Sony cameras and currently shoot with a Sony HVR-Z1U and HVR-A1U. I would not recommend the A1U as it doesn’t do well in low light. I love my Z1U but it’s discontinued and replaced with the Z7U (but that’s out of your price range at $5K). The Sony HVR-Z5U or HVR-V1U are good replacements for the VX2000. Both shoot HDV and use miniDV tape but you can get the HVR-DR60 Hard Disk Recording Unit or solid state HVR-MRC1K Memory Recording Unit for them if you want to go tapeless. I have a HVR-DR60 Hard Disk Recording Unit (discontinued but you can still find them around) for my Z1U which gives me 4hrs continuous recording. I prefer HDV because it’s extremely easy to edit. If you want AVCHD then the Sony HDR-AX2000 is a nice AVCHD Camcorder and said to have good low light capabilities. I just don’t like AVCHD. Your mileage may vary. 😉

Dave, I have a Canon Vixia HF S21 and I love it.

I’ve compared the Panasonic HDC-TM900 against the HF S21. The Canon has better color rendition.

You will need some sort of support as the Canon, is small and light weight. A simple bracket with a good handgrip will make your shots much more stable.

    My 2¢

I’m with you John. We just got 3 new Sony HXR-NX5U cameras. I’m impressed! And the price was right.
