unstable Vegas 11? related to Haali Media Splitter? I need debugging suggestions.
Do any of you Vegas users offer me a clue about my infuriating problem with Vegas being unstable??
Has anyone noticed Haali Media Splitter icon appearing in their system tray when they run Vegas? Does Haali run every time Vegas plays a media file, or only on first import? Or only to generate the .sfk??
Can any of you spot anything suspicious in the data below?? Can you think of any isolation tests I can try (see below for what I’ve done so far)?
My best guess is there’s an unstable codec in Vegas v11. Is there any way to get more information about Vegas’s codec as it reads a media file – versions, import errors in a log file somewhere, etc?
THANK YOU for any suggestions or help you can provide. I’m going crazy here (actually, I’m going to Edius. But I don’t want to leave Vegas -I just want it to WORK!! 🙂

Perth, AustraliaHere’s the full story:
I’ve been using Vegas as pro-sumer for six years now, on a variety of computers and versions. I’ve loved it…until today.
I bought Vegas Movie Studio HD and have been making a home movie, am editing together 7 GB in 262 video files on 2 tracks. There’s only the audio with the video. In other words, this should be a simple project.
The video files are copies straight off the SDHC card from my Sony NEX-3 camera, and from iPhone 4. The video files plays reliably in Quicktime, VLC, and Picasa.
e.g. M4H01661.MP4 properties:
video: 1280x720p, 29fps, 9109kbps data rate
audio: 135kbps, stereo 24kHzThe project is plain-Jane too: DV settings, 10 minutes long. All default options set – nothing custom in the menus or anything.
Clues:
1. when I open Vegas, it freezes for up to 10 seconds at a time…then recovers.2. sometimes, the Haali Media Splitter application, which I didn’t install, appears and disappears 3 times per second from my system tray while Vegas seems to be processing my files.
3. I’ve had no trouble editing large video files with Picasa, so I don’t think it’s corrupted files, or hard disk errors.
4. Typically I drag a file from the “Explorer” tab into the timeline. Mostly it works as expected – full audio and video. For a few files, only audio appears. For others, the video is drawn solid green, or solid red. I can still edit, and hear the audio fine, in both cases.
4a. Sometimes, when I have this problem, if I then load Picasa and play the video, then switch back to Vegas, the video will appear in Vegas. Then, it will disappear.
4b. Sometimes I can ‘force’ Vegas to read the file by opening th file in the Trimmer, before dragging it to the timeline.
5. Vegas is highly unstable. It crashes about once an hour.
6. I’ve tried 32bit Trial HD and 64bit Vegas Pro trial. They are both unstable, but not in exactly the same ways. 32bit is much more chuggy, stalls, then crashes; 64 bit crashes more suddenly. BUt, there’s a lot of variance.
7. I’ve tried making a new project, and opening an old one. the problems seem to follow the video files…but not any particular ones.
8. I’ve tried converting the video files to AVI, using Binkconv.exe (uncompressed full frame). THis works but I don’t have enough space to do this for all my files. I will try this using the USB3 drive overnight… (but dammit, I shouldn’t have to convert these files! )
9. every time I start sony vegas pro 11.0, it tells me there’s an update available, but when I check online, it’s the same version I have (11.0 Build 511). Is there a newer version somewhere?? I doubt i but can pray…
My system details: Dell Precision i7. THe video card is a NVidia Quadro 2000M, driver version is 275.19. I’m doing all my editing on the primary drive, which is a SSD drive. I’ve tried moving files to a USB3 external drive. No difference.

Vegas hangs for 5 minutes, then reports “system low on memory” though Task Manager reports 12GB RAM available (see screenshot at
