I know there has been other posts regarding the rendering speed improvements you get when you go with more cores, but here is another to encourage you to upgrade. 🙂

I created 2 video clips, cut each to be 1 minute in length, set it up as a 2-camera workflow, made 5 shot changes (every 10 sec), each with 1 second cross-fades, and an intro and extro fade of 5 seconds.

The render time with my old 2 core cpu was: 7 min, 33 sec
I installed the 4 core cpu, and the time was: 3 min, 57 sec

Which shows that, at least from 2 -> 4 cores, it scales very well, resulting in an x4 render time that is about 52% of the x2 render time.

Looking at the Task Manager, the 4 core render shows all the cores about equally busy, with total overall CPU usage varying from 81%-96%.

    Further info:

Windows 7, 32 bit installation, 3GB usable memory.
    x2 cpu: AMD Athlon II X2 250, 3.00 GHz
    x4 cpu: AMD Athlon II X4 645, 3.10 GHz

AVCHD video inputs were from a Canon Vixia HF R100,
    60i, XP+ (12 Mb/s), both with audio tracks with some voice over. Render was to WMV, 1280×720, 29.97, 5 sec/keyframe, 90% sharpness.
