  • Trouble with HD footage audio sync

    Hello,
I shot HD 1080i60 footage and captured it using iMovie. Then I “shared” it = Output is QT 1440X1080. Compression is Apple intermediate codec.

I import this footage, and do some simple things in AE — a matte, a scale, a reposition to make the footage match other footage I’m using in a Final Cut Pro editing project.

I render the AE project out as a short, 5-second Quicktime movie using MPEG4 as the compression. When I play it in Quicktime player, the audio is faster than the video — it goes out of sync about half way through.

I try something else — I render it using HDV 1080i60 for compression. This time, the Quicktime movie looks and sounds fine in QT player. But when I import it into Final Cut and play it as a clip, it “chokes” on itself: the audio plays, but the video starts and stops, seemingly skipping frames.

Did I screw up on the what went in, or the what came out, or both?

    Thanks!

Thanks, I’ll try to convert it to another codec. There is a reason for using imovie to capture digital video, even when editing in FCP. If you start and stop recording without rewinding your recording tape a little, you lose your timecode. This can happen, and did. Imovie allows you to capture video clip after clip in realtime without all the pre-roll drama of FCP. I’ve done this many, many times in the past, with both HD and SD video, creating clips and importing them into FCP, with no problems whatsoever. However, as you point out, you wind up with clips that have been compressed using something AE doesn’t like. Oh well, without all these technical interoperability problems, just about anybody could do this stuff.
