interlacing flicker in vegas pro
Posted by Troy Musson on August 10, 2011 at 7:52 amHi guys
I need a bit of help with vegas pro, I am reasonably new to video editing but ive grasped vegas pretty quick, my problem is i cannot seem to get rid of flicker in occassional clips. I am creating a wedding dvd which is 45mins long. the spec is PAL, 16.9 INTERLACED FROM MINI DV, vegas setup is lower field first main concept mpeg2 template 720 x 576 25fps ,interpolate fields, best, adjust source media unticked, dvd architect pal widescreen,Iframes 15, bit rate variable max 9 min 192,000. event reduce interlace flicker ticked and force resample.
After about rendering 10 times with different formats I am now pulling my hair out , the last render took 20 hours and i still have this problem. I have to say that the flicker is not in all the edited clips but very evident never the less. Please help someone ,any suggestions? thank you.

August 10, 2011 at 2:52 pmTry this (changes in bold):
The spec is PAL, 16.9 INTERLACED FROM MINI DV, vegas setup is lower field first main concept mpeg2 template 720 x 576 25fps ,blend fields, good, adjust source media ticked, dvd architect pal widescreen,Iframes 12, bit rate constant 8,000,000. event reduce interlace flicker unticked (should only be used for still images) and smart resample.
These settings should be okay for DVD content up to about 70 minutes.
If you need to use VBR for longer media, search this forum for Mark’s bit rate calculator!
When you start messing around with the default templates without understanding the consequences, you can get yourself in a world of strife.
If you are still experiencing flicker, are you mixing DV with HDV or AVCHD events?
Are you cropping your DV footage? Cropping will result in some unusual artifacts, especially during motion/panning.

February 24, 2012 at 10:59 pmThis is a very old thread, and no one is likely to respond. Start a brand new post and you might get a response from the guru’s. I am stumped.
Provide details of your source format, and where the problem is occuring. e.g. it is playing fine and happens after a certain amount of time has lapsed.
Is it only happening during transitions?
Is it images it is happening to, such as during pan and crop?
Are you mixing formats e.g. AVCHD or HDV or DV?
Have you ticked ‘Adjust source media to match project or render settings’ and it is still happening.
Are you doing a CBR or VBR encode? Are you doing a 2 pass VBR encode?
What ‘render as’ template are you using? Many posters work with NTSC, and some advice is NTSC specific.
All this information is helpful to the guru’s.

May 5, 2014 at 11:26 amWhat is your deinterlace method under project properties? blend fields or interpolate? You may need to set it to interpolate.

October 28, 2016 at 11:39 pmHello Nigel. Thanks so much for the help. I am in edge-flicker hell. I have read and watched various proposed solutions. Nothing has totally worked.
I am in Vegas Pro 8 on a government computer. I indeed am getting “unusual artifacts” during cropped footage. What to do?
Source footage: digital video of old WWII color home movies.
Cropped: to Widescreen, and some motion is required to feature the part of the image I want to feature.
Effects: I am using Brightness/Contrast, Color Correction, Color Balance, and Sharpen.
Output: “Rendering” to .WMV and to .MP4, default NTSC widescreen. The “artifacts” is a white border along the top of the cropped video, which then sometimes flickers. Unacceptable, but is there a solution????

October 29, 2016 at 1:13 amWhat I’ve done in similar situations is place a very narrow black strip on a track above the others to cover up the flickering edge. It only needs to be a couple of pixels high. Okay it reduces the visible image slightly but who will notice and it’s better than the flicker.
