If you are using 64-bit Vegas you will need the 64-bit versions of your codecs so the old 32-bit versions will not work.

This is the worst thing you can possible do. Never install a codec pack. It can (and does) overlay the good codecs that Vegas supplies with inferior ones that will cause Vegas not to work.

You should use a free utility like GSpot to determine which codec your AVI uses and only install that one codec from the manufacturer. Once again, if you’re using 64-bit Vegas, GSpot may tell you that the codec is installed but it’s only looking at 32-bit codecs so you still may need to install the 64-bit version of the codec if it even exists.

    Thanks for the tip John,

I assume that if one has installed a CODEC pack and wants the Sony originals, a simple Vegas re-install will do the trick?

No Gilles…You need to uninstall those codecs and if push comes to
shove and you cant uninstall, a system restore to before they
    were installed could also work.

    Thanks Steve,

Doing a sys restore is out of the question as it’s been too long since the codecs install.

what I don’t understand then is that John mentions “overlay the good codecs that Vegas supplies…” … why wouldn’t a reinstall of Vegas bring them back?

Codec packs are quite nasty. The seldom totally uninstall themselves cleanly and re-installing Vegas doesn’t always undo the damage. Some of them act as surrogates for several codecs and redirect output and it gets quite messy to untangle. Reformatting your PC is often the only solution to get rid of the problem which is why I say never install them in the first place.
