Unable to import avi into Vegas 10?! plz!
Hi everyone,
Due to my last complications with movie studio 9 here, i have decided to upgrade to vegas 10. (not movie studio)
Anyway now i have problems regarding importing certain files, you know where im going with this. . . . Cannot import avi, cannot import .ts
GOD frustrating!!
I could import both of these with movie studio and still have it intalled, why cant vegas 10 do it. I found people online with the same problem so i intalled k lite codec pack, god knows why because it works with movie studio. Still no avail hoping you could help.

Are you using the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro 10? If so, you will also need to the 64-bit version of any codecs.
Also it is never advisable to install any codec packs on a video editing workstation. This is guaranteed way to mess things up.

Amazing! I installed a few codecs but do you have any idea what codec i need to import .ts streams? I know its not the best format but my pvr records in ts files. The files are so big 1gb+ i dont want to waste time converting. My movie studio worked with them before but i cant find a 64 bit codec?

No. You need to determine what codec the file uses. Look at the documentation on your PVR.
Vegas Pro 10 64-bit should have no problem opening MPEG2 transport streams. You’re problem could be that you installed the K-Lite codec pack and it has replaced the high-quality codecs that you paid Sony good money for, with low quality free codecs. Unfortunately, the damage is done. These codec packs usually do not uninstall cleanly and leave your PC in a horrible state that is difficult to recover from.
If Vegas Pro 32-bit will open them then use that. If not, your problem could be related to the codec pack. First you need to determine what codec the .TS file uses.

Perhaps you didn’t understand my last post so let me say it a different way: You caused this problem.
Vegas Pro 10 has no problem with MPEG2 Transport Streams. I edit them all the time. It plays them perfectly right out-of-the-box. There is nothing special you need to do to make it work. You have caused the problem by installing the K-Like codec pak. This is not a Vegas problem. This is caused by your computer being messed up by installing a codec pak.
You can try uninstalling K-Lite and re-installing Vegas Pro and see if you can re-establish the Vegas codecs. Otherwise, the only other solution I know of is to rebuild the PC from scratch (i.e. format the hard drive and re-install Windows and never, ever , NEVER, install a codecpak again)
Just to give you an analogy: installing a codec-pak is like taking every pill in your medicine cabinet hoping that one of them will make you better… one of them might… but the others might kill you. It is never a good idea to install a codec-pak on a video editing workstation. You should always find the one codec that you need and install only that codec from a reputable source.

I know i caused this problem by doing that, the thing that i cannot understand is that vegas movie studio 9 can still import and render the mpeg2 transport streams?!? Its doing in my nut.Sorry & Thanks!

Because Movie Studio is 32-bit and uses 32-bit codecs and Vegas Pro 10 64-bit requires 64-bit codecs. This is why I asked, can Vegas Pro 10 32-bit read the file. It may only be the 64-bit MPEG2 decoder that is messed up.
Again, try re-installing Vegas Pro 10 64-bit and see if that helps. Also try Vegas Pro 32-bit. You can have both installed at the same time so you loose nothing by trying.

Quite strange, i just installed the 32bit version of Pro10 and still no avail. . .
Just checked movie studio and still works, i suppose im going to have to have a look into converting. Dont suppose you know of any quick but effective converters? Dont worry about loosing quality because it being uploaded to youtube, but needs to be run through vegas first to compress and split.

You know I’m thinkin’… just because the file is .TS it could still have AVC/H.264 inside. (i.e., it doesn’t necessarily have MPEG2 in it). My Hauppauge HD-PVR records .TS files with AVC/H.264 in it. Then I use tsMuxerGUI to remux them into .M2TS files. That might work for you.
