  What size/aspect ratio’s should photos be for 16×9 480p widescreen montage?

  Hi All,

  I’ve taken pictures using a Canon 5DMarkII (5614×3744) RAW and I need to create a DVD NTSC 480p wide-screen photo montage using Sony Vegas Pro 10.

  1. What size should my images be set to in Photo-shop, and which format (jpg,png) should I use?
  2. What should the aspect ratio be set to in Vegas on the project level?
  3. What should the aspect ratio be set to on the time-line level under the media tab, when you click on properties on the image/time-line?

  NTSC Widescreen is 873 x 480 in square pixels. If you are not going to add movement to the images by zooming in and panning, you should make your images 873 x 480 in Photoshop. If you want to leave room to pan and zoom, keep them 2x that or 1746 x 960. I like to use JPG but others use PNG. It’s up to you. Both work equally as well.

  The Pixel Aspect Ratio (PAR) should be: 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen). I would just use the NTSC DV 24p Widescreen (720×480, 23.976 fps) project template and don’t change anything.

  Since these are still images, the pixel aspect ratio should be 1.000 for the media (square pixels). Vegas will set this correctly by default.

  I would also render to 24p since this is the only progressive format allowed on an NTSC DVD.

  I want to add a video from my Canon 5dMarkII, which I believe is 30fps. I can’t add two different frame rates on the same disk/DVD correct?

  Sure you can. A lot of Hollywood DVD’s have the featured movie in 24p because it was shot on film but the “special features” might be 30fps (29.970) because a lot of behind the scenes footage is shot on video. There is no problem having both on the same DVD.
