Is there any way to format AC3 Audio and XDCAM EX Video on Vegas Pro 9?

Rendering in any format other than XDCAM EX is not an option.

    Thanks for your help.

I’m pretty sure that this is not possible with any software. XDCAM EX only supports uncompressed PCM audio.

    John,

    Thanks for your reply.

Do you have any ideas on how to add 4 seperate audio channels to an XDCAM EX format?

I am not using the audio in the traditional sense; so quality is not important, but sepearate signals are required.

The final project will however be put on BluRay Discs.

In the render dialog check [X] Enable multichannel mapping . Then press the Channels button that’s next to it to map the channels you want included in the render. Finally, press the Custom button and go to the Audio tab and set the Channels to: 4. That will give you 4 channels of audio in your MXF file.

    Thanks John,

I have been able to do this in the past, but I need 4 independent speakers. All the speakers are on after rendering.

I know this is actually Surround Sound and the XDCAM format does not support Surround Sound. I can use the single stereo application to achieve half of my goal. I was just wondering if you know of any other fix.

I’m sorry but I don’t understand what fix you are looking for. I assume your project audio was set to 5.1 Surround and the instructions I gave you placed the fist 4 channels into the MXF file. Isn’t this what you wanted?

    John,

There is no contol over the speakers. I can edit four seperate audio channels and they work great in preview. However, for example, if the front right speaker is edited to be the only channel emitting sound, sound comes out of all the speakers after rendering.

I realize this is noncompressive rendering. I am sure I am wrong, but I would think noncompression renedering would be easier to accomodate multichannels.

Would Vegas 10 or some other program accomodate multichannel audio in a XDCAM EX formate?

Hmmm… I’ve done some tests and it seems that it maps Front Left to Ch 1, Front Right to Ch 2, Center to Ch 3, and LFE to Ch 4 (not what I expected… LR & RR are left out).

Try panning your 4 tracks that way and see if it works like you expect.

    John,

LF,RF,LR,RR and Center speakers still activate after rendering with the new mappng. The preview before rendering works perfectly.

Did you turn off the non active speakers in the panner?

The panner is not a switch. It simply allows you to deliver MORE or LESS sound to a given speaker. In other words there will always be ‘leakage’ to the other speakers no matter where you are panned.

If you do not wish this leakage to be present then turn off each speaker that you don’t want the sound to go to.

For example, if you want a given track coming from the left front speaker ONLY then pan all the way to that speaker then click on the other speakers and they will gray out (indicating they are off and no sound going to them).

If you’re still leaking after this then you will need to examine your soundcard and other hardware for leakage issues on playback.

Yea, that’s a great idea. Turning the speakers off and leaving the pan in the center will keep the volume the same (i noticed that panning actually raised the volume). The only problem is that the LFE channel is only going to let low frequencies through so it’s not very valuable for carrying the 4th channel.
