EX1 & EX3 footage from mac into vegas
Hi,
I got some footage on a hard drive shot on a Sony EX1 and a EX3.
This footage was captured on a mac with dxcam util.I open this files on my pc.
In the vlc play I can see the video but no sound.
In Vegas, I have the audio but no video.I heard that if it was captured on a mac that the only option is to export it from FCP.
Is this right?
If I have to do this, to what format and settings should I export to?Or, is there any other way to solve this?

You need to be using at least Pro 9 and have a recent version of QuickTime on your computer.

Maybe I need to update quicktime. Will try that and post back the results.

Are the XDCAM clips wrapped as .mov files? I had a similar problem with .mov XDCAM clips that were exported via FCP. In order to view them correctly in Vegas I had to purchase a special codec to view them in Windows correctly.
If updating Quicktime doesn’t work, you may want to try the trial version of the Calibrated Q XD Decode codec:

The download is for the full version, but if you don’t pay for a license, it operates in demo mode.
If it works, but the files have difficulty playing on your system, you may have to down convert to edit them, then replace with the original media for final renders.

Another option is to see if the client has the original camera BVAP folders with the native .mp4 clips. Those should open up right away in Vegas.

There’s no need to buy anything.
A discussion on this exact issue on the Sony Vegas forum revealed the existence of a great and free utility on the Convergent Design site.
Look for a file called FileConverter, XDCAM .MOV to .MXF (Mac or Pc) at the bottom of that page.
I’ve used it and it works as advertised. -
My guess is that a Mac user wouldn’t shoot in mp4 format.
Just in case though, he’ll need the XDCAM EX ClipBrowser to be able to convert it from mp4 to MXF. -
Interesting. One of my clients has been (apparently) shooting .mp4 with the EX1 unless the bvap folders he is sending me are actually converted from another format. I didn’t need to use the clip browser for the mp4’s so maybe they were converted after all.

I’ve done some searches for the original discussion and can’t seem to find it. Do you happen to know off hand the link or thread name? I’d be interested in trying it. I looked long and hard for a solution and the only one I found was the Calibrated codec recommendation.
I am going to try out the software from the Convergent site. Although, maybe I shouldn’t, because if it works I’ll be sad that I spent the money!

I recently got a JVC HM700 and I have the option of recording in mp4 or MOV format.
I have it set to mp4 as ClipBrowser on a PC won’t even see the MOV files.
If I do any work for some FCP friends, then I’ll set it to MOV format, otherwise it’s mp4 for me. -
Well, it totally works (in my situation, at least). *sigh*
