Define “stable”? It’s not as stable as version 9.0 but it’s getting there. 10c is way more stable than 10a or 10 was. It also depends on your workflow and what FX you use and how much you stress it and what formats you render to. It’s a big complex program and depending on which parts you use, it will be more or less stable.
I am using it for production work but it does blow up occasionally but so did Vegas Pro 9.0. Ctrl+S is your best friend. 😉

January 25, 2011 at 3:34 amI make sure to safe before adding any effect, and after as well…I have worked with Vegas 9 and had TONS of crashes. At this point 10 seems to be better, but I have not done one of my 6 camera edits with it yet so here’s hoping!!
Good luck!Scott Francis

January 25, 2011 at 3:40 amYou mean CTRL-Z, John….
But, I am exceedingly happy with 10c. Never a problem, but then, I don’t edit AVCHD. (HDV multicamera projects to SD DVD’s).

Oh. I forget about CTRL-S since I can’t recall the last time Vegas crashed on me. I tend to go for an hour or two between saves.
Knock on wood?

January 25, 2011 at 6:56 amIt is like and always has been walking on eggs…and after 10 years of lets add this it will be so cool I can tell you..it has software patches all over the place …
Sony Vegas Pro needs to be rewritten from the ground up..like Adobe Premiere Pro 5 in the latest formats that are capable of running windows 7 64bit6 with access to the ram, etc and capable of handling the new formatts like DSLR Files, Red Files etc..

January 25, 2011 at 7:16 amWell that would be nice but I transcode my DSLR footage using Cineform, and it seems to work fine. No I haven’t edited 6 camera videos at this point with Vegas. But all in all, it is much *faster* that doing *the exact same thing* on my Apple dual quad core FCP machine. So much so faster that as long as I’m not working with someone (like a buddy) who has a JVC that shoots native XDCAM MOV files for FCP, that I do all my editing on Vegas. And don’t get me started on having to transcode my DSLR (Canon 7D) to Prores using Compressor rather than ‘natively’ using the MOV footage! So the grass is not greener. But I haven’t tried Adobe yet. I do use Lightroom for all my still work. Great program.
I have to agree that Vegas is not as stable as FCP, but is much faster when it *is* stable, which is usually. 10.c has been great for me, editing Panny AVCHD whereas 9 was not, not at all. I am rapidly not even transcoding AVCHD if the job is simple.
I am of the impression that the computer you are running it on is as much a factor as Vegas. No apologies for Sony’s development team, but Windows in general has a much wider range of ‘stuff’ that you can use, that doesn’t conform to a narrow definition of ‘device’ like Apple does. That’s a plus for Apple, by the way, but *costs more*. On the other hand, as most people here have done, you have a choice of motherboards, drives, ram, etc. That leads to variables that leads to instabily. You ought to see the testing labs for Windows! It’s a nightmare.
All this is to say that your mileage may vary. Your machine and the ‘stuff’ you add to it, may affect your stability more than mine might, for example. My stability is fine.

January 26, 2011 at 2:31 amThanks to everyone for your input. I am no stranger to computers and the vagaries of the MS Dos then Windows systems and associated hardware, and having written commercial programs in the past I just hate it when something isn’t working and I can’t get to the code and see if it is to blame or I am. Sort of not being able to fix your car these days without a degree in everything.
I love Vegas, having come from an ACE editing system back in the eighties to Avid, Premier, and Edius.
It is forums like this that keep the ship sailing.
So Thanks once again, and anchors aweigh.
