So on my Mac, if my computer motherboard died, I would simply buy a new system and restore using Time Machine my entire applications directory, and be back and running quickly. This time, my one year old HP motherboard fried, and it required a new machine. I bought a Dell, as I was not willing to try another HP unit, given that my last dell lasted four years with no problem. But my backup was rendered useless as I had drivers that didn’t work, and i did save my data, but not my applications. I’ve spent days reinstalling all my apps. Is there a better way to protect a Windows machine from a motherboard failure that requires a signficant upgrade to hardware drivers? Did I make an error in judgement and should I have simply bought another HP unit and swapped drives? I do like the Dell better, I must say. Built in eSata.

Download your dell drivers and install them after you restore from your backup.

[Danny Hays] “Download your dell drivers and install them after you restore from your backup.”

And if the computer won’t even boot the drive, you can use the Windows install CD to go into repair mode and repair the Windows installation. Then go to Dell and install the correct drivers like Danny said. No need to re-install everything.

There is a program called Paragon Drive Copy 10 that will fix up a drive after it’s been moved to another computer. That sounds like it would have worked for you as well. There is a “special edition” of this available today for free from Giveaway of the Day. You might want to download it for the future. Here is the link:
