So out of the blue, my CPU fan started making noise. I replaced it with another one that supposedly is quiet, but that one too is noisy, out of the box. I’ve got a supposedly ‘silent’ fan on order, for $12 but am confused, this machine ran silent until recently. Could it be a power supply not being able to keep up with the draw from the fan, slowing it somewhat, or do I just need to keep buying fans until I find a silent one. Why would fans suddenly start getting noisy? I’ve never had that happen before, in many years of computing..

Two fans? Same noise? I\’ve got to be thinking a mechanical obstruction poking up from the CPU fins. Is this a CPU fan? I suppose you\’ve checked for other mechanical obstructions? Another thought is a transferred vibration coming from another source?

Try plugging your computer into a different power source (plug). I’ve had a strange intermittent “fan surge” problem (noisy fan), when plugged into a UPS. Changing the power source resolved the problem.
