  • text bug when redering at 4.8 Mbps

    Hello,

I’ve encountered a possible bug when rendering video with text overlay in wmv format at 4.8 Mbps. I generated text using the built-in text generator (subtitles for the most part). I rendered the vid in wmv format at 3Mbps and it turned out fine.

We’ll be screening the vid later this week and so I wanted to do a render of slightly higher quality as it will be projected onto a big screen. But when I render it at 4.8 Mbps, all the generated text is misplaced. It appears as if the text has stayed in the same place relative to the old screen size (during the first render at 3Mbps). So now all the subtitles appear higher on the screen, cutting across people’s faces as they speak.

People’s names also normally appear on top of a black box on the bottom of the screen. This black box was also generated with the built in media generator but is not misplaced (so now the names appear slightly above the box).

So it seems only the text is misplaced. The images and everything else is otherwise perfect.

In the editing timeline, the text appears as it should, so while i could adjust it manually, i’d be doing it blindly, guesstimating where they would appear on the render.

Has anybody else encountered this problem? Am i doing something wrong? Is there a way of “locking” the text to the rendered screen size (it would surpise as i would assume that “locked” would be the default setting)? Or should i just give up and do an .avi render?

I’m kinda new at video editing and don’t know some of the technical details of redering. for example, I have no idea what 720-24p means, but other than bitrate, it’s the only difference i notice between the two types of render i have tried for this video. If that’s got something to do with it, i wouldn’t know, so please be patient with me!

    Thanks,
    Lazar

It sounds like you may have changed the resolution or aspect ratio along with the bit rate. In general, your project settings should match your render settings if you want no surprises.

    Thanks!
rookie mistake i guess. the resolution is bigger on the higher bitrate render, but i thought it wouldn’t matter since the aspect ratio was the same. i mean, Vegas managed to render the images and masks at a higher resolution, so i assumed it would also render the generated text at a higher resolution.
anyway, i’ll try to match the project settings to the render settings and see if it works. i’ll report back if there are more problems. (i’m having some non-vegas related computer issues right now, don’t want to run vegas….)

    Hello,
I’ve been trying for a while and I still have the same problem. I have tried setting everything to the same scrren size, PAR and fps and still nothing. Here is what I have.

Original footage shot on a mini-DV cam, appears in Vegas 9.0 as:
    DV 720 x 480 x 24
    PAR 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)
    SMPTE Drop 29.97 fps

    My project settings:
    720 x 480
    PAR 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)
    Frame rate: 29.970

    My generated text settings :
    720 x 480
    PAR 1.2121 (NTSC DV Widescreen)
    Frame rate: 29.970

    My prview settings:
under “Automatic Size Settings”, Vegas has selected 1280×800. There is no option to choose 720 x 480

    My render settings:
    Video: 29.970 fps, 720×480 Progressive, 5 Mbps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000 (there is NO OPTION for 1.2121, only an option for 1.33333)

As it is, the letters of my generated text come out stretched both on preview and on render.
The text is correctly placed on the preview, but comes out further down and to the right on the render. I notice that the render settings are “720×480 Progressive”. I’m not sure what the “Progressive” is and there doesn’t seem to be a way to take it off.

    Here are some screen shots:

    1. What I see in Vegas, notice the stretched lettering:

    2. What I see in full screen Preview:
(at least it shows the same thing that i see in the preview window, above. The full screen preview was coming out distorted until i changed and then changed back the preview settings! )

    3. What the render looks like (sorry for the actual picture of the screen, the “print screen” function doesn’t work for video players)

Notice how the video letterboxes and the letters are normal and no longer appear streched, but are further down and to the left than where i wanted them. It’s as if the text was on a sqare plane whose height was greater than that of the video.

Can someone please explain to me why it’s doing this and how I can fix it? I’ve tried so many different configurations thus far and they all seem to cause completely erratic behaviour from Vegas. I can see no rhyme nor reason in any of it.

    Thank you,
    Lazar

    [Lazar Konforti] “My render settings:
    Video: 29.970 fps, 720×480 Progressive, 5 Mbps
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.000 (there is NO OPTION for 1.2121, only an option for 1.33333)”

This is your problem right here. If you want to render from a PAR of 1.2121 to a PAR of 1.000 you have to change your resolution to match the PAR.

To do this, multiply your width by the PAR to get PAR 1.000.

    720 x 1.2121 = 873

So you need to render to:

873 x 480 PAR 1.0 for your project to look correct.

    Wow! It worked!
Thank you so much, I never would have thought of doing that! I still don’t fully understand why it works (it seems to only affect the text and not the video images, which are of the same dimentions) but I’m really happy that it does.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!

You’re welcome. It’s because the text is generated media and always has a PAR of 1.0 while your video has a PAR of 1.2121. I’m glad it’s all working now.
