Just wanted to nip back and say a HUGE thankyou: for your time, advice and patience.
You’ve really helped me on the first steps to understanding what on earth camcorders are all about…I’m a student at Oxford University and will be recommending this website to any of my friends also thinking about moving into careers/further education in the Media. You’ve been really, really helpful.
So yeh, thanks. 🙂

November 25, 2008 at 10:18 am in reply to: Time is running out! Should I get a new camera or just upgrade my software?Hi,
So (for future reference) which of these jack points should I be looking for?
Video In/Out,
S-Video In/Out,
i.LINK (DV) In/Out,
i.LINK (MICROMV) In/OutI’m feeling really lost.
The DCR HC35E is an older model. Does its HC53E updated version have the right ports?
The only reason I’d thought the CANON was better was because it had an external Audio Jack and because a reviewer said the picture quality was better than the SONY’s and that the SONY hisses while it records.
Urgh. I dunno.

I’ve been thinking the Canon MD235 might be a better deal anyway, since it has an external mic jack (which will be useful for making documentaries). Here’s a link: https://www.play.com/Electronics/Electronics/4-/5125676/Canon-MD235-Mini-DV-Digital-Camcorder/Product.html
What do you think? Does this one have “Firewire in mode”? I’m still not sure I know what that means….
I thought I’d just buy the camera, then buy a Firewire cable (probably 400, since that what my year-old MacBook Pro runs). But it sounds like that might be my stupidity talking again…Thankyou so much for your continuing advice.

I think this is the one I’d go for, but I want to be certain it’ll work first…

One last question: Amazon informs me there is a newer version of this model. Should I go for the newer one? (Bizarrely, it’s cheaper).
Here are the links (top=old/ bottom=new):

…..
Thanks again for all your help. The best advice I’ve had yet.

Should I get a new camera or just upgrade my software?P.S) Fret not- I have lessons booked with someone who can actually teach me how to use FCP in a couple of weeks (as in, a professional) …I promise I wont even be attempting to learn that one DIY-style! 🙂

November 24, 2008 at 11:37 am in reply to: Time is running out! Should I get a new camera or just upgrade my software?Ok, have had a quick look before I shoot off to work. Here are 3 potential options. It’d be great if you could take a REAL quick look and tell me if I’m going to put my foot in it again.

Once again, Rafael, thankyou so much. It’s a scary old world for the beginner out there; it seems like everyone is trying to dupe you into parting with as much money as possible, regardless of your complete technological ineptitude! So thanks for being so honest.

I can’t tell you how great it is to have a straight answer to this question, especially since money is so tight and I’m really trying to just get going with the filming etc.
I will post that camera back straight away today.
Regarding: “just buy a SD camcorder with FW.” -Does FW mean ‘Fire Wire’ or ‘Firmware’ (I’m sorry, I’m so completely a newbie at this…. Also, do you have any particular recommendations at all? What should I be looking for?
THANKYOU THANKYOU THANKYOU. 🙂

Well…
This is the camera model: https://www.amazon.co.uk/HD-8Z-DIGITAL-1080P-DEFINITION-CAMERA/dp/B001IVN9XK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1227477027&sr=8-2It’s an HD-8Z Digital 1080P HD Camcorder. 1080p @ 30fps and 720p @ 60fps. Uses an SDHC card.
My version of FCP is 5.0, as far as I can see.
Hope that helps.
