You can also help things out by adding color gels to the lighting on the background only. For instance, if you have a blue BG and think purple is needed, just add some red effects gel. You can also add more blue to pull the reds out of the lights, especially if they’re tungsten. A color wheel can help determine the best color to use by picking a color opposite your character’s clothing.

[Chandler Kauffman] “When recording on the Zoom in 4 track mode, is it possible to monitor just one channel? “

Yes, Use the mixer function to mute the other three channels. Although it’s a bit clunky since you will need to use the scroll wheel on each channel to do so.

[Chandler Kauffman] “Also, what do you guys think of running the Zoom in auto levels, bad idea?”

Yes, bad idea. Any absence of dialog or desirable sound will cause the circuit to raise the noise floor and you will have to do a bunch of DAW surgery.

Do use the onboard limiter. It works quite well and can be set to several different modes.

If you’re doing double-system, you might as well keep the H4n dry and out of the water. The onboards will get nothing useable in the bag and the levels can be monitored, along with the dialog. You can submerge audio cable if the connections are sealed. I assume this is a different scene from the car interior?

  • The more expensive black cable is designed for more for rigorous use such as nightly road shows where the cable is subjected to people, beer and road cases.

The clear jacketed cable is best suited for fixed installations – but should perform equally as well – unless it’s subjected to repeated conditions described above.

Also, although they look identical, the connectors MAY be different – but not a $60 diff. There seems to be a lot of hype and snake oil when it comes to cables, especially signal cables. Some esoteric manufacturers even claim that they have “directionality” in the copper itself. Now it’s all about the power cables, with some even charging $350 for a basic 6 ft. IEC power cable. Those bozos don’t mention that it gets plugged into a 75 cent wall receptacle!

If you learn some soldering basics, you can make your own version of that same cable for about $20 in components.

[Kevin Hansen] “I usually use iMovie for rough cuts “

You won’t be able to view the EX3 footage in iMovie.

It might be a good idea to just buy a consumer model HDV camera to shoot the non-sync sound stuff instead of the PD170. At least that keeps things 1080i.

Thanks Andy, Yeah, I do the “Shift-N” quite a bit but I haven’t used the batch export yet. That’s probably the way to go since you would have to specify a default destination folder for any kind of macro anyhow. Thanks for the tip.

Though, It would be nice to have a right-click menu item called “save still frame as…”

If you must, try this technique.

Use a mic tree with two fairly good matched mics (I use AKG C3000s with the pad engaged) or a decent single-point stereo mic. Place that mic tree as close to the front of the band as you can. The perfect position will vary, but it is usually about ten feet out and about ten feet up from the front of stage. you may have to hang the mics. The next thing is to set up a dynamic mic behind the drummer and another, if possible, around the bass amp. Run all these sources into a small mixer and use high-isolation headphones to tweak a good mix. This will take some trial and error to get a good balance because even with good high-isolation headphones, you will “feel” the low end and not be able to get it right away. Record a sound check if possible. Send the output of the mixer to your camera or use a four-track recorder to do a second system recording. ( I use a Zoom H4N or a Sound Devices 744T, other will work but the 4 track recorders will give you post-mix capabilities).

It’s a lot of work to set up but it’s the best way to record a live show where you have no co-oporation from the band’s sound engineer. You are still totally dependent on his ability to mix a decent show.

By the way, the C3000s are rated and a maximum SPL of 150db when the pad is engaged, That is crazy high levels for a large-diaphragm condenser.

receiver…as in AM/FM tuner and amp?

Not quite sure what you mean by the term. The KRKs don’t need an amp (or receiver). They do need a mixer or preamp to feed them the correct levels. A mixer would provide the best options for other gear such as Blu-Ray and DVD inputs

Not much in the professional realm for under $200 though. This might be your best bet:

[jim stamos] “is there a noticeable difference in quality between the two?”

You will notice a difference on a full 1920×1080 Pro monitor or a very good consumer TV and if you do any compositing, it will benefit your image.

The bigger difference, in my opinion, is between Panasonic 1080 shot with a camera that has only 1280×1080 pixels of information and Sony cams with 1920×1080 chips natively. Sony 1080P into a KiPro at 100Mb/s (or Nanoflash) produces an image that holds up to anything, especially when used with a good DOF adapter/lens combo.

I’m sure some will disagree though (Pany and Red owners).
